Do you like stadiums/arenas named after corporations and businesses? Why or why not?

I am not fond of the idea of stadiums and arenas being named after corporations. I like the days when stadiums were named after teams or cities such as Tiger Stadium, Cleveland Stadium, Candlestick Park, Ebbets Field, Comisky Park, Chicago Stadium, and the Pacific Coliseum. Today, you have names such as Comerica Park, MCI Center, the Wachovia Center, Petco Park, and Safeco Field.

Actually if the name of the park does not glorify one person or corporation it seems like a good name. Yea name it after the type of park or arena to the team of the area that pertains to that sport. If it is commercially sponsored it kills the spirit of a team identity. What if the Roman Colisieum was named after some rich temporary corporation of its time, do you think it would of been marveled as the greatest arenas of all times?! Imagine Bartles and James Colisium, or Rigo Spumanti Winer-arena! ... but I bet in that stadium there must of been at least one wardrobe malfunction per games at halftime! Also it was designed for all sports, even chariot races, maybe they could of called it Chariot-ona 500! There is where you can put your greedy sponsors, on the chariots themselves!

Personally I don't like sports that much, but it still seems a tad tacky. I think I remember the "purer" names of my youth.

Although in 50 years the corporate names will seem as normal as all the company stickers on a race car.

They're just names. With all the contributions and donations from these corporations, might as well let them have it.

i try to not refer to any stadiums that are named after corporations. the two exceptions are wrigley field and ford field. wrigley field has always been that and i find ford field acceptable because the ford family owns the detroit lions. i even have issues with charlotte motor speedway being called lowe's motor speedway.

i understand that somebody needs to foot the bill to build the stadiums but unless the corporation pays for the building, the stadium should be named after the team and/or city. in most cases it's the taxpayers that pay for the new stadiums.

I was really sad to see "Candlestick Park" become "3 Com Park"...there is no comparison between the 2 names. On the other hand, after actually "seeing" the new park, I had to admit that it was amazing. Still, though...NOTHING can replace Candlestick Park for native northern Californians. All the memories...

the people who created the stadium have a right. You would understand if you were creating a stadium name.

Commercials and marketing and corporate sponsership is ruining our culture. Nothing in our art (whether it be music, theatre, movies, etc.) is authentic anymore, unless some local artist does something that just annoys everyone around him. Corporations have sullied everything they've touched. Led Zepplin songs used to sell Cadillacs. An animated "The Scream" by Edvard Munch to sell some other cars (Nissans I think). Hell, corporations even make anti-corporate movies for us to spend money on, because they know we have nowhere else to go. So, to answer your question, anything that benefits major corporations is bad for US, in my opinion.

I think it shows that the sponsor gave big bucks for advertising and cared nothing about aesthetics, history, local pride, etc. That nearly every media source gives the sponsor's name big play without any sort of restraint just adds to the problem.

Locally, a state park has literally hundreds of internal features named for companies or big donors. The epitome of idiocy there is the incredibly badly named 'US West Lake'.

Greed. Pure greed.

Sigh.

Personally, I thinks it's tacky.

no sports should be a way to get away from corporite life and enjoy yourself. I personaly live in chicago the first thing you see when you go to a baseball game is a massive advertisement for wrigley or US cellular. the only decently named stadium in the chicago area is soldier field, which is dedicated to the people who protect our freedom not to better cell phones or a longer lasting gum!!!!!!!!!
