Too many businesses ask for your phone number and address, what is the polite answer to not share information

I walked into a beauty salon after exercising and when I left the receptionist wanted my full name, address, phone number.
I gave her my name and number but because I didn't give her my address she wouldn't give me the discount that members of the fitness club usually receive. It made me wonder what is a polite way to not divulge information when businesses ask as so many do these days. "It's personal" just invites a debate.

Just say, "I would rather not". If they persist then THEY are the ones that are being rude. If they want to "debate" just tell them that you have your reasons and it is not up for debate.

I get asked for my zipcode when I shop at the local Micheals craft store.. I think the purpose of that is to see which area most of their customers are from and what they are buying the most of..This way can be sure to keep items stocked at this store that may not be as popular at Micheals stores in different zip code.
Some stores and businesses have sales or specials that will state in fine print "for local residents only " or other similar disclaimers...
Perhaps when they ask you for that information you could ask them why they need to know (especially if you are paying cash for their goods or services) and just tell them that you feel uncomfortable giving out personal information unless it is for a very good reason (for example if you purchased something that must be delivered to your house.)

I can sympathize with you on this... sometimes I feel that I should just walk around with all my personal info printed on my t-shirt for everyone to see....lol

I always say, "i dont give out my personal information" and leave it at that. Sometimes they say it is so the store can track where their customers come from but then i say, "you can do that with just my zip code or area code you dont need my full information"

That usually stops them.
