Explain how business rates may have influenced the decision to move to new premises.

The only quote related to this in the source material is: 'He moved premises to a bigger site on an industrial estate just outside the city centre, encouraged by lower business rates'. Seriously, it's just a melting pot of different issues thrown in this case study with nothing else in their addressing it. What are 'business rates'? Taxes? Which ones? Rent? Is it to with the national non-domestic rate? WHy would they be lower? Less in demand?

Business rates are the Local Authority tax on business premises. These pay for the weekly rubbish collection and other council services like health and safety checks etc.

The scale of charges will vary from some parts of town to another - depending on how valuable/desireable the business premises are. So, if this guy moved to an out-of-town industrial area from a central main street position - then his rates will be cheaper.

There is also the possibility that the local authority makes the industrial area deliberately cheaper - to encourage businesses to site themselves together and away from residential areas ( depending on the type of company involved). Small shops need to be near residential areas - but light industrial factories do not.
