Do Americans get irritated if...?

Hi, I work in my parents' small business on my free time and often I receive phone calls. Sometimes I ask the caller on the line to spell out his/her last name and address so I can record their name correctly. I have to do it because I don't know how some American names and certain street addresses are spelled. (I'm still learning English). Do Americans get irritated if they are asked to do such?

I don't, it's better than guessing and having the wrong information.Plus, my name is uncommon and difficult to spell, so I'm used to it.

I think that anyone gives you an attitude about that is very rude, and those kinds of people make Americans look like jerks.

Some do because they are naive and think you should automatically KNOW how to spell their last name and the funny sounding street they live on. I always spell out my last name without being asked because I know of at least 3 ways the person on the other end could spell my name WRONG. I also spell out the name of my town.

What is really fun is if you ask them to spell their name, and they speed through the spelling. Then you ask them again, and they get even more irritated.

*sigh* You just can't win.

The average American will have no problem with this.

As matter of fact we often do this. You must remember our citizens come from many different backgrounds, and just as many different names. Also there can be more than one way to spell many of the different names (personal as well as street).

Asking some one to spell out their name and street address is very professional.
