Stolen Credit Card Number - Should I contact the police? |
My father has a business credit card and he noticed a charge on his online statement from overstock.com and right away called me and asked me if I have ordered anything from them. Nope, I haven't, called overstock.com and it turns out someone has his credit card number. The person made an order for a $375.00 home theater system to Wilton Manors, FL. Overstock.com told me they would reroute the package and credit me the money and couldn't give me an exact address of the person unless they get contacted by authorities. Called the credit card company, they credited the charge and changed the credit card number. Now I'm debating whether or not to call Wilton Manors police department and have them contact overstock.com, will it be a waste of time or should I do it? He can put the account on fraud alert for 90 days through Trans Union Fraud Dept. Their toll free # 1-800-680-7289. They will notify the other 2 bureaus for you at no cost. Better to be safe than sorry later. It has to be renewed every 90 days. I would call the police, but I wouldn't cancel the cc. My husband had his cc stolen about 7 yrs ago and it still affects his credit now. Whenever he tries to open accounts they are denied because they don't know if it's him or not. I would just call the police. Cancel the card. Yes call them, overstock will give them the address and the moron who stole it will most likely be caught. It's not like you have anything to lose! do it !! m |
