Is there a legitimate purpose for a "forwarding agent"?

Please do not answer if you think it's a job scam; I'm already aware of that possibility. I want to know if there ACTUALLY IS a legitimate reason to send packages to a residence only to be forwarded to another address.

For example, say a "business" has small packages from Europe and needs to send them to a "forwarding agent's" residence. You then take the packages to UPS/Fedex/USPS/etc in order to forward to their "customers". This company claims to be in logistics and they say they need "forwarding agents" since it would be more economical and their warehouse in LA can't handle the load.

Is it POSSIBLE that this could be a legitimate need of this "company"??? Again if you think it's a scam, DON"T ANSWER PLEASE!! If no one answers, I'll know it's definitely a scam. But if someone can think of a real need for such a position that is legit, I'd like to hear it. Thanks

There is a legitimate reason for a freight forwarder. One is to consolidate loads from several customers to get lower shipping rates or meet a volume requirement, the other is to save shipping costs internationally. Its cheaper to ship a crate from europe to the usa, get it through customs , and then ship to the customers.

There are companies that do that though. Be very cautious of ANY work from home offers that ask you to pay out money.
