Why do you end a letter with a closing signature?

I think the title speaks for itself. I just never understood why. Like if you are writing a business letter, your name, address, and phone number is already on the page at the top. Why would you close with your name? Idk I just don't get it i guess :P

It's kind of the equivalent of having a conversation with someone and just walking off.

Since this is something that is written, you want to give the person you're speaking to an indication that your letter is coming to a close.
