How do I register my new vehicle if it has a lien on it and cannot find the lien holder to sign off on it?

We purchased a van from a co worker. He signed off on the pink slip and gave it to us. (this is obviously my first time doing this) because I didn't know there was a lien on the van. So when I went to DMV to register it they said I had to have the lien signed off. I went to the address on the pink slip and it isn't a location of a business its a residence and I can't find the location or business online. So now I dont know what to do so I can get this van registered in my name since I can't find the buisness. Any idea's

When there is a Lien on a vehicle, the title can not be transferred over to you unless they sign off on the title..since you can not get in contact with the Lien holder you should be able to obtain information on this business from the local city building..maybe they have some more information for you - if not you will need to do a title search which usually starts off around $150.00. This will take some time to get figured out since you are unable to contact the individual you purchased the car from, they should have told you before they sold the car that there was a Lien on the car and if they did tell you then they should have got the lien taken care of before the car was ever sold!

I am surprised that you could even buy it with a lien on it.

if truck has lein on it the ins co is listed on title as is the lien holder unless lien holder is buy here pay here dealer which may be why the address is not busness but private owner of lien the dmv should be able to give name on title that holds lien or insurance co listed on pink slip most titles that have money owed need full insurance not just pip so they they get paid if you can not find info on title or pink go to your bank they should be able to help or go to you insur co agent they can help get through red tape stuff

Have a title search done through an abstract company. If there's a lien they'll find it. but it may cost you a couple hundred bucks
