Is it really necessary (or safe) to provide my bank account number in a rental application???

We are casually looking at some apartments at this point, and (at least) one of the applications for the apartment complexes wants my bank name, address, and account numbers.

I can understand a credit check but do they really need to look at my bank account and see how much money I have to see if I qualify for their apartments???

I could possibly understand if I was trying to qualify for lower income housing but these are higher end apartments that I will be paying full price on and I don't think its any of their business how much $ is in my account.

Is there a reason they would need this?

All of that information is PRINTED on every check you write.

Why would it matter if they have it or not? They can't do anything with the information.

No, all they will really check is your credit and income. They can check whether you have bounced checks. They don't need your bank info. You can if you like, and it is perfectly acceptable to say yes you have a checking and savings and your balance. But to give out account numbers is dangerous.
They should not even ask.

Good catch! You are obviously a savvy shopper and wise to question the need to give out such personal information.
