How long till the postal service in the United States will be a relic of the past?

I don't live in a large population center, but I have mail going to the wrong address even though it is addressed correctly on a frequeny basis. How badly are things getting messed up in large cities like New York, Chicago, or DC? Either they change the way they do business such as no Saturday delivery, or , I know this is a bit of a stretch, give accurate service, or they will turn into a true relic of the past!

Pretty soon, I think, but not for the reasons you stated.

A whole new generation of Americans have never written a letter in their lives, much less put it into the mail. They communicate by texting messages, using Instant Messenger, and sending email, and they pay their bills and do their banking and catalog shopping on-line.

The post office keeps raising its rates annually, but I think eventually, that it will just go out of business.

I mailed my reply to you but it ended up in Denver, CO.!!!!

Government is expanding, not shrinking. Government does not cut back, it always expands.

OMG...what will all the kids do when they try and send letters to santa..???...sorry for your bad luck...this is a lousy excuse...but millions and millions of mail is handled every day...once in a while some are bound to become lost...myself i pay everything i can online or over the phone with a debt card or check by phone..comes in handy during those lousy weather days...also with this age of hi-tech electronics i find emailing some one gives me a faster response..

yo my dads worked there 24 years.........................ITS HELLLL
they have to hire idiots cuz of affiirmative action to run plants (my dad works inside as a mail clerk dude) He says the plant manager is dumber than a box of rocks with a HIGHSCHOOL DIPLOMA ONLY!!!! so dont blame the p.o. blame the ones in charge

if you know that my dad has touched over 5-6 million pieces of mail in his life u would think differently

the post office is government funded, THEY ARE NOT PROFITABLE WHATSOEVER each yeare..... like fedex or ups

they are never going to be a relic of the past and the post office has paid for everything for me as a youth diapers to highschool clothes my friend.........so the post office is a tough freakin job and theere will be mistakes as in every other company

I don't think it's the norm for it to be lost, but the exception. Depends on how the sender addressed it to begin with then.

I would think that with some advancements/options now the post office will have decreased service use in the foreseeable future as more people pay bills automatically by phone or automatic debit from accounts, and there are stores you can take a utility bill to and stil pay it through there. I don't feel it'll become obsolete though, who would get those junk mail and catalogs all sent then as companies find this the cheapest route to still go to have stuff like that delivered.

There are SOME people without computer access that want to order things by catalog and such and this is their way to.

I feel that bills may get paid online or by automatic debit or phone, but they are not sent to someone that way to start with.

The post office had talked (at least here) of doing away with the saturday delivery day and then said it would be too much of a mail delivery back up to let that pile up at the station for 2 days or it would be 3 if they had their federal holiday off then.

I would not see this service become non existant ever in this.
