I'm Canadian - How Can I Obtain a US Credit Card?

Has anyone here done this before? I tried asking at a couple US banks, but they need you to have a residential address in the US, whereas I only have a mailing address in the states that I use to pick up my US mail.

I need to have it for business expenses as well as to buy stuff from certain online stores such as buy.com who have now closed off their store to all international customers except those that have US credit cards.

Reportedly it's rather difficult as Social Security Numbers are essential for obtaining credit (whereas here the SIN is optional up here), so if you're not a resident alien or US citizen it can be a real nuisance getting a card.

I've heard that RBC has a US card they can give you if you reside or work in the US, also been told that Amex might give you a US card, but both of these would still be tied to your Canadian credit reports.

Have you asked if you can have your street and billing address as different addresses? Not everyone lives at the address where their mail is delivered to, so maybe you still can do this.
