I received an email saying someone is going to kill me? what should I do?

I do remember hearing something on tv about a week ago when the mail arrived but was missed by me that some scam was going on but can't remember what they said to do. I called police and they knew nothing about it. they told me to call the tv station but I can't remember what station it was and they are all closed. should I do anything? shouldn't the cops have asked me one thing?

here is what it said ending with an email address

HELLO
I am very sorry for you Xxxxxx, is a pity that this is how your life is
going to end as soon as you don't comply. As you can see there is no
need of
introducing myself to you because I don't have any business with you,
my
duty as I am mailing you now is just to KILL you and I have to do it
as I
have already been paid for that.
Someone you call a friend wants you Dead by all means, and the person

that he
wanted you dead and he provided us with your name ,picture and other
necessary information's we needed about you. So I sent my boys to
track you
down and they have carried out the necessary investigation needed for
the
operation on you, and they have done that but I told them not to kill
you
that I will like to contact you and see if your life is Important to
you or
not since their findings shows that you are innocent.
I called my client back and ask him of your email address which I
didn't
tell him what I wanted to do with it and he gave it to me and I am
using it
to contact you now. As I am writing to you now my men are monitoring
you and
they are telling me everything about you.
Now do you want to LIVE OR DIE? As someone has paid us to kill you.
Get back

EDIT..it sucks getting this shortly after I missed death by one second in a major car accident recently and then the cat scans showed a pulmonary nodule and just had a pet scan and so scared to me if I had lung cancer and might die like my dad did at a young age, just get a call that thank God the test is negative an hour before I got this email...but I do think it is a scam I searched online ..still an abuser who is insane and hates me and who my kids thought would kill me someday might b an enemy but he is too poor and does not have my email address to my knowledge unless it is found online somewhere...but I saw some online with the exact same message so I suspect it is a sick scam but people could really worry about this..

Don't worry. This is a scam that was sent to you (and probably thousands of other people) from somewhere outside the US. They are fishing for someone gullible enough, isolated enough or scared enough to believe them. There is no one watching you. You are not in danger. There is no contract on your life. This is someone in a foreign country trying to steal money by scaring people into giving it to them. You have already reported it. If you want, you could send it to the FBI or the Fraud Investigation unit, but nothing would probably be done about it. Just block the sender and don't give it another thought. It's just more spam.

well this should not be happening so def forward this to the police. even though it seems rediculous it might be somewhat serious and it looks like they just want money but im not sure...search it on google to see if there are any articles about it. good luck !

i would start by blocking the person sending you this, contact the police again and tell them more, they should have asked you more questions. dont panic about it, its most likely nothing, just some guy trying to make some money in a very sick way

my suggestion is to show this email to the police and just beg them to try to find this person. this way you can find out if its a fake or not. if it is don't worry about it. if it's not a fake find out which friend it is but use the police to help you. I hope all works out for you.

Heres the key that will put an end to it.
That email was sent from a computer, that had an IP address on it. That IP is synced directly with the file that was sent from it.
IF you forwarded it to authorities or know anybody that has IT experience you would be able to trace that email from and to its original sender. SO keep it, forward it to who you need to, and get this sob in jail or court for cyber harassment

omg this is really scary..but remain calm
there is no way someone would send this as a joke. Do u suscpect anyone? If so, stay away from them. Try asking the police again. They cant just ignore u like that. Well i hope everything will work out for u.
Stay Safe!

Janie, this sounds very much like a scam artist who is trying to scare you and extort money, which is the bottom line. The sad thing, some unsuspecting and frightened people have actually been conned by these sickos. I have heard of others who have received similar emails and promptly reported them to the authorities. Call them again and leave it in their hands and don't worry too much.

Malachi: That was a good point

Oh Jamie, that is frightening for you I know.
But this is NOT the way a contract works. Trust me when I say that. I have personal reason to know about how a hit is done.
(No, I'm not a Wiseguy or gal.)
A hit is not discused or negotiated like this. The hit is just done, quietly, cleanly, no muss, no fuss.
The element of surprise is key in a hit job.
I really doubt the validity of the e-mail.
But keep the police informed, as this is an extortion , and is illegal, not to mention reprehensible.

Don't worry. I googled it and found a little article about it containing almost the exact message that you have recieved. Check it out. http://urbanlegends.about.com/library/bl...

Don't worry you're safe. It's just a scam, and it has happened to other people too.
