His Holiness, Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, founder of the Transcendental Meditation Technique, has passed away today in Vlodrop, Netherlands.
The achievements of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi are profound in the field of knowledge and immense in the field of action. During the past 50 years, more than six million people have learned the Transcendental Meditation technique and are rising to enlightenment through their twice-daily practice.
Maharishi has trained over 40,000 teachers, opened thousands of teaching centers, and founded hundreds of schools, colleges and universities. Maharishi Vedic ScienceSM programs are being applied in private businesses, public institutions and homes in every country.
A Global Organization
On January 1, 1958, Maharishi formally launched his worldwide movement. Since then Maharishi has circled the globe many times, teaching his simple Transcendental Meditation technique, writing many books, consulting with leaders of government, including heads of state, and addressing conferences of the world鈥檚 leading scientists, educators and intellectuals.
In 1961, Maharishi began courses to train teachers of the Transcendental Meditation program. Today, the Transcendental Meditation technique is still taught in the same systematic way through an easy and enjoyable seven-step course.
In 1964, Maharishi鈥檚 first book, Science of Being and Art of Living, was published. This classic has sold over one million copies and has been translated into 15 languages. It speaks just as clearly to readers today and was recently reissued by Plume Books, a division of Penguin Putnam.
In 1971, Maharishi trained 2000 teachers of the Transcendental Meditation program and launched a World Plan to establish TM庐Centers in every country. Now Maharishi is building Maharishi Peace Palaces in 3000 major cities of the world to offer the full range of Maharishi Vedic Science programs, and to generate an influence of peace for each community and the world as a whole.
Scientific Validation
Convinced that the positive changes reported by meditators could be verified through scientific methods, Maharishi encouraged scientific research on the Transcendental Meditation program. The first research results were published in Scientific American in 1970.
Since then, scientists have made the Transcendental Meditation technique the most thoroughly studied program for human development in the annals of modern science鈥攎ore than 600 studies have been conducted at over 200 independent universities and research institutions in 30 countries and published in over 100 peer-reviewed scholarly journals. These studies have shown Maharishi鈥檚 program to be by far the most effective remedy for the ills of modern life. Regarding the Donations and the $2,500 fee to learn TM financed the construction of Peace Palaces, or meditation centers, in dozens of cities around the world. It paid for hundreds of new schools in India.
Supporters pointed to hundreds of scientific studies showing that meditation reduces stress, lowers blood pressure, improves concentration and raises results for students and businessmen.
"Don't fight darkness. Bring the light, and darkness will disappear," Maharishi said in a 2006 interview, repeating one of his own mantras.
With his background in physics, he brought his message to the West in a language that mixed the occult and science that became the buzz of college campuses. He described TM as "the unified field of all the laws of nature." Maharishi Mahesh Yogi once said that he brought Transcendental Meditation to the world for one supreme purpose, "To help raise life to its full dignity". Maharishi also said that Transcendental Meditation was so effortless and so natural to unfold the full value of life.
This was a great soul who offered so much to so many who heard his message. Those who were aware of the great knowledge of life that he presented and as a result of that recognition, actually were intelligent enough to make the decision to learn the technique gained a great deal. Some were never aware of how much they actually gained because the technique was so subtle and so natural and so effortless. Everyone who learned this TM Technique gained a great good, whether they were aware of it or not. They were the lucky ones.
Maharishi Mahesh Yogi will be honored in India, near Vernase where many are gathered for the Kumba Mehla, on February 11, 2008, on Vasant Panchami which is also referred to as the Day of Saraswati. The Shankaracharya of Jyotir Math will be present along with thousands who revered this great saint, Maharishi Mahesh Yogi.
May all glory and grace be bestowed upon Maharish Mahesh Yogi. He brought an enlightened message and great good to this world. The message was not religious, as it encompassed all religions, but spiritual so everyone could enjoy the benefits.
Jai Guru Dev! All glory to the great master!
Here is a description of Kumba Mehla from the internet:
The Kumba Mehla is a giant Hindu festival in India, held once
every 12 years in various cities along the banks of the Ganges. Called
"an ocean of humanity", it is widely believed to be the largest
congregation of people on the planet, this year drawing an estimated 70
million people to the small Indian town of Allahabad in Northern India
to bathe at propitious times in the Holy, cleansing
waters of the Ganges River. Um...
Alright.
RIP Maharishi.
Peace and lurve. Actually, I did not know that he died today.
To tell you the truth, I thought he died several years ago.
I think maybe I was thinking of the Bagwan Shree Ragneesh, who was a TOTALLY different person.
Being a Beatle's fan, I've always had kind of a soft spot for TM and and the Maharishi.
I'm sad he's gone :( Another humble billionaire has passed on. Awww.
http://www.rickross.com/groups/tm.html We just came from the Golden Dome for a short memorial service and puja.
Yes, the knowledge he brought to the world through the translation of the Ved is easy to be lived by all. The domino effect is happening and many people are awakening to the natural state of man; enlightenment.
For those who do TM, don't give up. The goal IS attainable.
And remember the words of Patanjali who wrote the Yoga Sutras, which are a description of enlightenment not a prescription, "Awakening was instantaneous, clarity comes in time and space."
I learned TM in 1969 and became a teacher in 1970. I have seen it change lives, always for the better, including my own. Recommended to find that inner peace and harmony you hear about. Stick with it and you will be pleasantly surprised with the results.
