Can you "De-publish" a website already online?

Using Yahoo Small Business program, I recently put up an electronic version of a work portfolio and have numerous links to documents on the website detailing my work. I didn't put this website up for the general public, but rather for convenience of several people of whom I am sharing my work. I previously deleted all personal information (names, addresses, etc) in these word and pdf files that I linked and also applied their password-protection feature for the whole site.

However, I noticed when I put in log-in and password, I get a warning that there is "basic authentication without a secure connection" and am wondering whether that is enough? I'm a little leary to risk someone "cracking the code."
In the meantime while I try to figure this out, is there anyway to "de-activate" the website (i.e. take it offline) without deleting everything?

Well of course if someone really wanted to, they could easily hack the password protection you have for the sight, but not the average person. For a more secure connection, the sight should have the HTTPS: option. As for "de-activating" the sight, you could create a simple HTML file with the text "Offline" and save it as index.htm or index.html and FTP that file to your website server overwriting the existing one.
