Is it possible for a business to stop a person from having an email address similar to their companys name?

Yes, but it will involve a long legal process. It depends mainly on whether the offender deliberately wants the company's name:

1) to have a substantial profit when it is sold back to the company,

2) whether it is used for phishing (to deceive the real company's customers)

3) whether the offender has enough money to compensate the prosecuting company for legal fees

absoultely. but it does involve a bit of a legal process
