So This Is True About IP Address?

Are you aware that many websites and most hackers use IP addresses to monitor your personal business and that your home address and other personal information about you can be retrieved once your IP address is known?

So why sooo many people say no one can get a hold of your info or where you live?

So will the best thing for me to do is to hide my IP address?

I heard it wouldn't be a good idea to hide my IP address? Why is that?

With an IP address, they can know in what city, country you live but not your exact address. If someone knows your IP address they can just find out in what city, country ur from and what ISP(Internet service provider) your using and where its headquartered and other info like the 'abuse' contact no. and email...and maybe what is ur connection type (like DSL or dial up and so on)...

How can they know this? There are free online services which let you put in an IP address and you can do a 'who-is' lookup on that IP.

Besides, the free services, there are programs which you can download, that do a who-is lookup. Most of the good ones are shareware though.

Only your ISP knows ur exact address provided they assigned you a static IP address (the ip address which doesn't change)

And,there's no way ur ISP will reveal the info about where you live to anyone , except if there's a 'case' against you...and there are legal orders to know the exact address of a particular static IP.

i don't think its a bad idea to hide your real ip address. If you want to surf anonymously, why not hide your real ip address?

The reason for this is there are free IP trackers available for download to put on the blogs and websites. what they do is track the IP addresses,Operating systems and the Internet browsers of people who visit ...although some trackers will just track ip addresses and not OS and browsers.

so if you wanna surf anonymously, you can use one of the many free online proxy websites and surf the net thru' them provided they offer anonymous or high anonymous proxies. Or you can hunt for free anonymous or high anonymous http proxies on the web and configure your browser to use them proxies.

The difference between anonymous and high anonymous proxy is that the anonymous proxy will hide your real IP and transfer its own proxy servers IP to the website ur visiting. But in doing that, they will 'tell' the website that a proxy is being used and the Ip being submitted to the website is not the users actual IP but the proxy's IP. Whilst high anonymous proxies will hide your real IP and at the same time will not let the website ur visiting know that a proxy is being used to mask the real IP.

However , most http proxies don't support SSL, which means by hiding ur real ip and using them proxies, u wont be able to surf the sites that are secure--meaning the sites that start with https and not http. That is, you can't login to websites which use a secure login.

There are some very good uses of using proxy servers to surf the web. The best example is suppose your country blocks certain websites. Where i live, they blocked certain websites...but i used a 'workaround'...i used proxy servers to mask my real IP so that i could visit the websites even when they were blocked by the govt. of my country.

First of all, there are literally hundreds of ways someone can initiate the gathering of information. Public records are easily accessible if you know where and in what order to get things.

As far as hiding your IP address, you can't. You can use a proxy server, but that proxy server and anything in between you and it will have your IP address. If someone doesn't know your home address, they can't send you a letter. The same is true of IP addresses, information can't get to your computer unless it knows where to go. Bottom line - if you want to use the internet, you HAVE to have an IP address.

They may be able to locate my city, but I doubt they can get personal information about me.

Firstly, detailed information such as you exact street address cannot be retrieved just by someone knowing your IP address. The only people who can directly link you IP address with you home address is you ISP (i.e. Comcast, AT&T, Cox, AOL ect.) and they will probably never release this information unless forced to do so by a court order. Secondly, you cannot "hide" your IP address. There are many ways to make it appear as if you are located somewhere else (proxies) but these aren't always reliable and you will always leave a trail of your "real" IP address somewhere.

All you have to do to hide your IP address is hold down control+f4 while searching a website. This maskes the third number in your ip address and, therefore, blocks anyone from knowing who you are. Example:

Normal IP: 394.29.10.32
IP w/ ctrl+f4: 39*.29.10.32

without that "4," no one will know you.

The IP address itself holds no information to you. It is the computer that the IP address points that holds the information ie. your computer (the one you are using to read this) holds all that data. And no it cannot tell you where that person lives unless you have static IP from your ISP in which case, they look up your IP address on the ISP computers and viola! they have your address.

The best thing to hide your IP address is to use a proxy. Either visit www.proxy.org and tell your browser to search the web through one of the sites listed or sometimes your local ISP might have a proxy. THe way you find out is goto a site like grc.com run the Shields UP test, and check if that ip address is yours or not. (if not, then you are behind a proxy) To check your IP address go Start->Run and type cmd, then type ipconfig Linux users start a shell up and type ifconfig. This program shows your network cards details like IP address etc.

Oh and you can't hide your IP address completely, because then other computers don't know where to send the web pages when you browse the web. The best method is to use a proxy, like above.

HTH

Because alot of your programs have to have your IP Address in order for you to be able to access their features....so I wouldn't hide it. I lost mine once, to a hacker apparently, it wasn't fun trying to fix that issue either....had to create a whole new IP Address, the computer didnt even recognize me.....just be really careful.
