In the US must one register with the local government to start a business?

to start a business must one go to the local /state or federal government to register what they do, sell/make, the name and address/ contact info of their planned business?
and if so is this information available to the public and if so is it available on the internet?
PLEASE HELP!!!

Write to your local registrar. (Look under State Government in the phone book.) They'll tell you what you need. You do need the proper forms to start a business.

yes you must get a business license, so they can be sure that you are paying taxes . and it goes on a list of new businesses somewhere ,because solicitors start calling you immediately after you register
