Can I have 2 server computers connected at the same IP address?

Hi guys this questions goes to those expert on IT , networking and servers stuff, I'm planning to get another computer and use it as server, but I already have one server computer using my static IP address my question is simple can I use more than one server computer at the same IP address? I have 4 ports modem (came with my comcast business connection or account) and I'm using just 1 of them, what about the other 3? can I use another of those port and connect that new server computer and get not interruptions on my existing server? if it work my existing server is using port 21 should I need use another port for this new server computer into the same IP address? do you guys think that is possible? my existing server computer have windows server 2003 R2 edition and really I wants to know if I could use them separade but with the same IP address? what is your opinion guys? I will appreciate your help as always thanks!

Nope you cannot have 2 PC's with the same IP address on the same network

It depends how your 'fixed' ip address works... if it's fixed on the outside of your DSL router then natted onto your server... so your PC doesn't have your 'fixed' IP address at all then yes you can directly connect a second PC as a server and the NATting will keep track of where the packets originated from and pass them back to the right PC.

If the 'fixed' IP address is on your PC... is passed straight through your router then you CANNOT connect a second PC with the same IP address to the router. It will cause catastrophic failure in the packet routing and essentially nothing will work. The NATing translation probably isn't the case if you allow outside world things to initiate the connect to your PC (ie someone out there logs onto your server).

Now, if you want to spend money you can get a box specifically designed for load balancing and hook it between your two Ps and the router and the box will load balance the connections between the two PCs. It will use NATting to keep track and separate the two PCs out... so neither of them will have the 'fixed' IP address. These boxes (they are made by various companies... Cisco, F5, etc) are *not* cheap - probably more expensive than your server.

You are confused about your question, but I think I know what you means :)

Okay first, there's NO WAY you can use the same IP address for two system/PC which is connected together in the same network. But from your Question, I sense that you're talking about NAT (Network Address Translation).

YES, you can use your only one static & registered IP address to serving another servers using what they refered as PAT (Port Address Translation) or NAT-Overload.
Using PAT, one registered IP address can be use to connect multiple servers with different TCP port numbers.

You need to configure your border router to do this by activate the NAT function. Some SOHO routers use the term "Virtual Servers" in their web-based menu. Try to see the HELP section on how to use this features.

After the Virtual Servers or PAT has been activated. You can use private IP address for all your servers. For example ServerA using IP: 192.168.100.11 and ServerB using IP: 192.168.100.12

If ServerA has webserver running on it as well as ServerB, you can reach serverA webpage by hit the registered IP address (from outside your network) with appropriate TCP port you've configured before such as:

http://200.200.200.200:801 or
http://200.200.200.200:802

In this scenario, I assume the registered IP public is 200.200.200.200 and you've configured the NAT/Virtual Server so if someone put 801 as the destionation TCP port, it will be forwarded to ServerA (192.168.100.11 Port 80) and if someone put 802 as the destination TCP port, it will be forwarded to ServerB (192.168.100.12 Port 80).

Hope this help.

Each computer you connect to a router will be assigned its own ip address. The base part of the ip address will remain the same, but have different ending numbers.

They can not share the same ip address, so to speak.

This is what your current network sounds like to me. Correct me if I am wrong.

Your Server PC has a the static IP given from your ISP.
Your ISP's modem/router is a 4 port router/switch and is set as a HUB or a switch and not as a router. (i.e. does not have an IP address and just passes information through).

If this is correct then you have two choices,

First choice is you will have to get a 2nd IP address from you ISP for your new server since a network cannot have two computers with the same IP address.

Second choice is to purchase a router/switch such as a Linksys. Install it and set it up so that it has an IP address and has routes IP address with NAT. Then set your server to have a private IP address such as 192.168.1.10 and set your second server to have a different IP address such as 192.168.1.11. The IP addresses must be different on each server. Then set your router to forward the ports of each application to the server the application is being used on. For example: Server 1 is an FTP server so you will forward port 21 to server 1. Server 2 is a web server so you will forward port 80 to server 2.

If your Internet connection passes through a modem and then into your 4 port router/switch(this is most likely) you can do the above second choice without needed to purchase a router/switch. An example to know if your setup is actually like this it would be setup as follows: The coaxial cable will be connected to a box that has 4 or 5 lights on it and then an Ethernet cable will connect the box with the 4 or 5 lights on it (and has the coax cable connected to it) to the router/switch that has 4 ports and from there you will have an Ethernet cable connecting the router/switch to your Server PC.

Hope this help.

ok put both servers behind a d-link router
run one of those 4 from your cable modem to the WAN port of the router. then plug the 2 machine sinto the ports on the router. your servers will get internal IP addresses.
then you can forward ports out to the one public IP
in other words say

server 1: 192.168.1.100 port 21 -> public port 21
server 2: 192.168.1.101 port 21 -> public port 2121

and the same with any other service you want, just get creative wit h eas y to memorize ports then you will hav emultiple machines behind this NAT router and someone using resources on the outside will see it all as a single server.

The great part of this is you let services run on there st andard ports inside, but whne you map the forwarding out ot the public ip through the router... you can choose the public port to be different thant he private internal port of the ser vice.
