Tracking an IP address to a deleted account?

I keep getting emails from my ex boyfriend that are just mean but non threatening. Here's what he does...he makes up several fake email addresses and then sends it out from didtheyreadit.com's website. He also is using either his neighbor's wireless internet connection or possibly another wireless connection from a local business in the neighborhood. (How do I know this, because that's how he gained access to the internet when we dated.) IHe says I can't prove anything because the emails are not being sent from his internet provider so there's no way to trace them back to him. The only information I can get from the ip address is that it is out of state. I've contacted didtheyreadit.com a few times but they have not responded to me. Any help would be great.

He is also going back and deleting these fake accounts after sending out emails from them. So that's why I would like to know if the ip address can be traced to him or will it just be traced to his neighbor?

Unless he has access to the neighbors wireless router his access and footprint is logged on the router. Among the things logged will be the mac address of his wireless card.
If you look at the... well this is a horse of a different color here...
I am going to town right now and will be back to analyze their methods and have the "cure" for prevention of this stalker you call an ex-boyfriend... Save all of your emails and consider reporting this to your local law enforcement agency... Whether it is the city police, the sheriffs department etc...
His access to the site is logged on their servers and under subpoena they will diverge the originating IP address... Then an analysis of the routers logs and his computer will be all it takes to nail this b*****d... Oops sorry for the cussing...
Bottom line is he is stalking and it is illegal... right now the law may not be able to prove he did it but that won't stop them from approaching him and letting him know they know and if he doesn't cease he will be arrested...
Also from your post you have apparently talked to him and discussed this with him... Next time record your conversation when you call or talk to him... Armed with the recording the law will be that much more intimidating...

If you want to discuss this more in depth you can reach me at treslayr1 at yahoo dot com
Good luck with this psycho...

And I will find out how to circumvent their methods of email did they read it...
8 to 16 hours tops...

Edit:
Hi Maria,
I am back and found the information you need.
First what the website didtheyreadit.com is using is a bogus picture file that calls on their server for that particular picture. But the picture is there but is malformed so it does not download but your web browser continues trying to download it thereby telling the server how long you had the email opened up and what IP address you are at... See the pic sent to me by their email below in the sources I listed.
Second we can keep him from doing this again very easily...
Assuming you are using your yahoo email account you just need to go into your options menu and go to Spam protection menu. There go down and select the option to "Block all images until I've had a chance to look it over". This will block the image from trying to download and keep the site from knowing who what when and where. And he will then be kept in the dark.
If you are using Outlook express it should by default block these images from opening as well. If it still is that way then do not click on the part that says "Some pictures have been blocked to prevent the sender from identifying your computer Click here to download the pictures".
If it is no longer doing that then go into the tools menu then options then the security tab. There look about midway down and put the checkmark back in the Block images and other external content in HTML email.

Now for fun and kicks and giggles you can do this. Call your local FBI office or police department and explain what you have been going through. Tell them you do not want to file any charges at this time but you would like them to read a copy of the email and allow the picture file to open... Then when he sees the email has been opened and looks to see where it was opened he will find the FBI's or Police departments IP address and will know you have reported him. That should keep him away... If he still continues then you have no choice but to report him... Your very life may depend on it...

And as for the "lady" below me suggesting I may be of an unscrupulous nature is offending to me... I understand the fears of the unknown with the internet and certainly caution is advised in all endeavors. However Yahoo answers has this neat thing that allows one to look into the nature of the person answering by looking how he/she responded to questions answered.... You can also harvest a good bit of information from the type of answers they answer to. To suggest I would possibly do something illegal without at least looking at that person is not necessarily cautious but lazy.
I too am from the south. I have the pleasures of knowing many southern belles and call them friends. But they are of the old school. And they would not have uttered such just because it was easy to...
Perhaps I am hasty and you were just having a bad night. I do not know... But if you look at my best to answer ratio you will find it fairly high... 56% I think... Meaning over half of my answers have been chosen as a best answer... I think about what I am writing before I hit the send button. Mousing over your identity and I realize your identity says "X southern belle". Hmmmm

Any activity done from his computer will be permanently "logged" on his hard drive. I would try looking into the state's (where he resides) legal definition of harassment, which more than likely this case would meet the criteria. Then contact an attorney if all else fails.

Yes, what he's doing is logged on his hard drive. But, the police need a warrant to be able to seize it. They need a VERY good reason to get that war rent. You could try showing them what he sends but you must be sure that there's nothing on YOUR computer that's incriminating in any way because they can seize yours, too.

Yes, stalking can be very serious. I would tell the police that.

If they can't or won't do anything, go to the FBI.

EDIT: the guy above me gave some good suggestions. Just do NOT contact him!!! If he's that good, he should know that giving out a personal e-mail addy like that is very dangerous. Some of what he does to "help" you may even be illegal. Simply something to think about. ;)

Keep every e-mail he sends, as well as every other electronic forms of contact as they will be useful to police or in the event a civil case arises. Do not alter them in any way beyond moving to another folder or directory.

Although he is not being overtly threatening, his behaviour is harassment and could be grounds for civil or criminal offense.

Even if he deletes accounts after sending the e-mails, the service providers will have, for a while anyway, logs corresponding with the time/datestamps on the e-mails he sent as well as additional information regarding what IP address he was using to access the accounts.

In order for service providers to release information from their logs they require a court order and will then be able to assist the police.

In some municipalities, piggybacking on someone else's wireless connection without their knowledge or permission may also be a criminal offense, and that would again require law enforcement to become involved.

Depending upon how long this has been going on and the level of harassment, the situation could easily escalate into other forms of harassment offline and even threatening behaviour.

Keep an eye on things and if there is the slightest hint that the situation is escalating contact your local police for assistance.

Addendum: You are welcome to e-mail me if I can be of help.
