How can I find out more about my family Military history?

I know that my Great Grandfather and my Grandfather both served in different branches of the Military (The Army & The Guard), and I also know that my Great Grandfather lost his leg as a result of a wound he received in World War 1, so that might be a Purple Heart.

But other than that there is nothing else that I personally know. I'm going to ask my family and everything but I need another source like a website, Government office in New York or

anything else that I can find out more about them and
Most Importantly find out

what medals or other honors they've received.

What units they served in.

How long they served.

Anything that will lead me to that information will be very helpful as I'm creating a shadow box honoring them but I don't know much about them. Thanks for your help!

We are not very sure how to spell my Great Grandfathers first or last name as we don't have a lot of records or anything. His name is most likely
Ciro Gaita.

Here you go:http://www.aac.va.gov/vault/about.php

Go to military.com they have alot of info on how to obtain records and you can ask vetrans if anyone may knew your family members it is a good start. Good Luck.

There aren't any government sites that will let you discover military records without knowing service numbers or social security numbers. There are often dozens on men with the same name in the same service. The best bet is for you to try to do as thorough a genealogical search as you can and then expand that into military records.
