Tax preparation and refund request?

I got my taxes prepared at Liberty Tax. The lady who prepared my taxes said I will only get about $2000 back. For the past five years I had been getting more then that. When it came to letting her know how much I had invested into business, like child care expenses and laptop expenses, she informed to claim them next year. After a day they called to say that my file was rejected and that i will have to mail in my papers. I was so frustrated I asked for a refund of the $329 I paid to have the taxes done and I was informed by the manager that she can authorize the refund and that I will have to talk to the owner. When I asked to talk to the owner of the franchise and i was informed he comes and goes and that they can not give me any number to contact him. I contacted the head office of Liberty Tax and they never got back to me. I wanted a full refund so I can file my taxes at another branch closer to place where I had to be out of town. Any anyone have advise how to claim refund?

There seem to be several things wrong here. Child care expenses aren't business expenses, although they are very possibly eligible expenses for a child care credit. And a business expense paid in 2007 can't just be kept for next year - it sounds like maybe she didn't know what to do with it. Then there's the rejection - did they say WHY it was rejected?

I'd send a letter, certified mail with a return receipt requested, to the owner at the address where you got your taxes done, letting him know that you expect a refund. It doesn't sound unreasonable - sounds like the person who did your taxes isn't very competent. If you put it on a credit card, notify your bank that the services weren't properly provided and they'll take it off.

Are you really sure you want to go to another Liberty branch after this experience?

Sounds like you have a legal problem. If you can't solve with Liberty Tax, then they might be more responsive if they got a letter from an attorney.

Never go to a "tax service" to have your taxes done when you own a business. I'm a CPA and don't even charge that much and your service would have been remarkably better.

In the meantime, is your direct deposit information on the tax return? Your expenses are deductible in the year in which they were paid, so make sure all of that is right. If the return is okay (why was your file rejected) just mail it and don't go there again!

Contact owner of Liberty Tax, John Hewitt.

Sounds like your preparer was inexperienced. And it seems your report is confused. Usually a return is rejected because another return has already claimed a dependent. So not enough info here to help you out.
