A path in law for a science major?

I am a junior in college working on a Genetics BS, History BA, and possibly a philo minor. I have recently decided to pursue law school instead of dental school.

A bit of bg: My Hist major is a 3.8+, my phil classes ave to a 3.9. However, this tips with my 2.2 in science (all the C's in Physics and Chem). Consequently, my gpa is an unimpressive 3.0ish. I have not taken an LSAT yet but I did quite well on the DAT (very unrelated I know, but I hope it means my test taking skills aren't rusty). Recommendations from History/Phil profs should be alright. I've a strong record of volunteering/leadership positions.

Will be science grades greatly hinder my acceptance into law schools (beyond what was said in sketch's question)? For now I wld like to take a year off after graduation and perhaps work as a paralegal or intern in a law office for a while. I've in mind to dovetail science w/ law, is there a branch of law would best suit this intention?

I guess I should clarify a bit. I did quite well in my Biology (upper level/grad Genetics courses and lab). It's specifically the Physics/GenChem/Orgo plus the 6 labs that went with each. My science gpa is comprised of 10 of 18 courses being other than biology itself. If I really decide wholeheartedly to pursue law, by gpa would also go up significantly in ensuing years since I would not have to take Microbiology +lab, Physio +lab, Anatomy+lab, and a semester of physics and orgo which I still have to take. But this would specifically require I drop my BS and get a BA Biology. I guess for law school it wouldn't matter right? Should I work on raising my gpa and forget "standing out" w/ a mediocre duel degree :P? B/c it seems like gpa is the deciding factor of even getting your foot in the door for any decent law school.

Well, patent / IP law seems to be the perfect area if you are looking to "dovetail science w/ law." In IP law, you either help people apply for patents, or else you file or defend lawsuits over patents. So an understanding of the science behind the inventions is very helpful.

That said, a 3.0 GPA will make it challenging for you to get into a good law school (unless you seriously ace the LSAT), and it can be hard to get a good job (realistically, you will need big $$ to pay off the law school loans) if you go to an average law school. To get a good lawyer job, you need to either go to one of the top 20-25 law schools and get good grades, or go to an average law school and get excellent grades. So you can do it--but you need to keep your law school grades high.

Furthermore, having a science background often helps a lot when you are applying for a job in patent / IP law. However, if you got C's in all your science classes, I think that will undermine the benefit that you get (in terms of hiring) from having a science degree. So, you might end up having to do some kind of law other than IP law. (And are you sure IP is really for you, if you're not doing well in science classes?)

Good luck with your decision!
