How do I move a server?

What are the steps I need to take to move a file server from the region office to the branch office?

1. Backup the data.
2. Determine the server use (who uses it, how do they access it and what for?).
3. Recreate the server use logically. Typically this is done through DNS, creating an alias record, or by remapping drives, shares, etc. Ensure that the users can access the data in the same way at the new location. If the domain or site of the server changes, I'd make those changes to DNS as well, and make sure proper trusts were set up.
4. I would use a "dummy" workstation at the new location first, to ensure my logical recreation functions as designed.
5. Physically move the server and test again.

can the server be down? if so just power it down and move it. you'll need a new IP most likely. If you have issues such as accessing it after you move it, we need more info

If you currently use a vpn to connect to the server form the local office, you may need to make the vpn receive on another (maybe domain controller) server. If head office still needs access to it you need a connection from head office to the local.
