How do you quit a job nicely??

I'm working as a temp-2-hire on a job and have only been on this job for two days & I've had a better opportunity come up - to run my own branch office!! How do I nicely quit my job after the temp before me just walked off the job?? Please help b/c I don't want to add any salt to their wounds. The girl before me abandoned them & now I feel like I'm gonna be doing the same thing.

Honesty is the best policy. They can replace you, especially after less than a week-that's what temp agencies are for! Besides, you're likely in a probationary period with your "temp-to-hire" employer, which gives both you and your employer the option of ending the relationship without further notice within 30, 60 or 90 days.

It's admirable that you don't want to leave them in a lurch, especially in lieu of the fact that the prior employee walked off the job; however, frame this with the knowledge that they would fire or lay you off without any of the hand ringing that you've shown them.

This is a powerful lesson to learn: nothing is more disorientating than giving your loyalty and all to a job only to have it "turn on" and "discard you," which all jobs are capable of doing.

Seriously, though, honesty is the best policy and it's obvious that you are a young person with a good work ethic and strong character. Enjoy your new job.

Compile a letter of resignation explaining that a better opportunity came up and that your decision to leave was not their doing. Also, specify your last date in the letter of resignation.

Give a 1 week notice so they can find someone else.

well congratulations. give them a notice, at least a week would be nice. This shows to both parties, current and upcoming, that you take your responsibilities seriously and you have character. Explain your opportunity and just give a heads up. You shouldn't feel too bad, you have a chance for something better in your life

That is the beauty of working as a temp. You don't have to stay in any one assignment and on the companies side they don't have to keep you either. Its nice that you inform the company, but you really only have responsibility to inform the temp agency.

you have to do what you gotta do. if there's a better opportunity for you, take it. just explain to your immediate supervisor your situation. with all due respect, you're most likely not their most valued asset having just worked there 2 days as a temp. they'll get over it quickly. and if your supervisor is a reasonable person, he/she would understand and support your decision. don't burden yourself if you have something else goin for you.
