What do you do when you have no references?

I have no job references because my work history is horrible. I apply to proffessional jobs, and get interviewed however, I do not have any references. How does one go about in getting references when the work that I've done is low paying. (such as a cashier, laundry attendant, and stock person)

Try to find someone at a previous job who can give you a reference. References do not need to be in the same industry. My concern when a person said they had no references was that the person just couldn't get along with people.

Some companies will also allow non-professional references, but they are generally given less weight.

Did you ever make a friend at any of your previous companies. They are considered associates and can give reference to different things for you such as puncuality, work ethic, etc. You have other people in your life such as uncles or aunts believe it or not these can work, friends can too as long as they do not sound to biased over the phone and always let those people know who will be calling them and for what position. Your references don't necessarily have to come from a boss at your previous jobs. They can sometimes come from co-workers. Another option is to do some volunteer work. They will often be happy to provide references.

Like mentioned before, a reference does not necessarily have to come from the same industry you are trying to get into. People change careers all the time.

References can definitely still come from previous jobs, highlighting your work ethics and personality. Also, if you are in school, you can ask professors or counselors for references. Maybe even friends in that presently work in the medical field that could highlight what a great candidate you can be for the position you are applying for and the qualities you can add to the organization.
