'Camera Man' on The Office?

In the show The Office, is there a story behind why their branch is being filmed? I mean, I know it's a tv show and duh, it's filmed, but in several episodes they interact with whoever's filming them. My family and I were just wondering if there's ever been any explanation of it.

Not much. The American version of The Office is based on the BBC version, in which the branch was being filmed for a documentary. Although the American version has developed well beyond its predecessor (the BBC version only ran for twelve episodes), the "documentary" is still barely addressed. I have heard that in the future, there will be more interaction with the "film crew", and that in the final episode of the show, we will be surprised to find out who is actually filming this documentary.

In the very beginning there was. I can't remember what it was exactly, but basically they are being filmed for a reality type show. That's the premise behind the interaction with the camera man. They do those little (private) chats in a secluded area. It's just funny, b/c they make fun of everything on that show.
