General enlistment for the marines?

ok my bro got a 28 on his asvab and the marines took him cause every branch can take a certain when it is that branches turn amount of people when all the recruiting offices gets a fax about they can, so my bro is going to go in as a CATS 4 but he had very few jobs 2 chose from and his recruiter told him that the jobs that he could selection was not guarenteed, so his recruiter told him about the general enlistment that when he is in bootcamp for like the 5th week he will go meet with someone there and he will pick 5 jobs and witch ever one the marines need the most he will be.But everyone keeps telling him he will be put in infantry when his recruiter says they cannot put him in infantry if he is in general enlistment, so what i want to know is is that a lie and he will be put there or he will get 2 pick the 5 jobs he like most and be assigned to if the the marines need that job the most? he doesn't mind on being in the infantry but i'm just don't want my bro in iraq and no jokes pls

Wow, since you need a 32 just to get in, I'll go with the fact that he must have scored at least that, although there are a few waivers granted. That test is designed to be passed by someone with an 8th grade education (still need your High School diploma, if he had a GED he would have had to have scored a 50). Apparently, your brother is borderline retarded. No, there aren't many jobs that he is qualified for. Most likely he won't wind up in the infantry because while they don't require a high score, they do prefer that you can think.

Your brother will be enlisting on what is known as an Open Contract. That means the Marine Corps can assign him to whatever field they like, including the infantry. With his mouth breather score, if he really wants to do this, he had better take what he can get.

Bottom line, once you sign up they own your butt. He can express preferences but they can...and will...send him where they need him, doing what they want him to do. I have no doubt that your brother completely understands this.

What they are asking your brother to do is go OPEN CONTRACT. This means no finalized job listed in his enlistment contract. They will let him indicate what jobs he prefers; however, ultimately he will take the job they give him.

If they are in need of infantrymen then that is the job he will get. If they need cooks then that is the job he gets. Once he signs he will have no real control over it.

This does not mean he will be totally screwed over. That is not the intent of the recruiter. The recruiter is trying to find a way for your brother to get in and go to Boot camp. Category 4's have a tough time being accepted, and when they open it up a recruiter must move fast to get them in.
OPEN CONTRACT has always been a way to get in faster, but you take your chances.

No matter what kind of contract it will be an 8 year contract. Wether it is 4 years active or 4 years IRR ( Inactive ready reserve) The Marine Corps will own him for that time. All that means is even when completes his 4 years active duty he could at any point still be recalled to active duty if it is deemed neccesary for the protection of this country.
Second if your brother wants to be a Marine, and he wants to be in the infantry dont worry. He will be ok. Iraq is fun. You get to meet new and interesting people and hopefully if your lucky shoot them.
