Bird experts? anyone in the "bird field" ?

theres a bird.

he lives in the tree outside my office window

i dont usually have a problem with birds but this one is insane

he routinely makes it a game to sit on the branch of the tree then crash into the window as hard as he can.

hes not dead yet. (obviously)

and the window's not broken

but its the most annoying thing. he'll do it over and over again.

most of the time it'll be 500-700times a day

does anyone know what he wants or why he/she might be doing this?

if this helps, its a greyish-brown colored bird, with a red belly, and its rather fat when it sits down on the branch.
while flying its about 3/4 of the size of a crow, and it has an orange beak.

although he seems to be there all the time, there is no nest that i can see and even if there was im not going up there to try to get it down and relocate the little motherfuc|<er.

please help me someone...anyone?

Sounds like a robin. But whatever it is he is displaying territorial rights against the "other bird" he sees in the window.

You can frost the outside of the window to cut down the reflection, place a window box there with flowers to help him realize it isn't another bird, hang a couple strips of reflective tape over the window to frighten him off, put a screen over the window, and any thing else you can think of to eliminate the mirror finish on the outside of the window so that he can't see himself.

I have never heard of this problem before! Sorry, I have no suggestions...

Why not call the city or county animal control officer?! The bird sounds ill. It is amazingly tough, tough!

This is a very common event. All birds have territories, and during the breeding/mating season defend them fiercely. Any other male bird (or reflection in window or mirror) triggers an aggressive territorial response. This response is in-built, and will continue until the `tresspasser` is scared away, or the bird dies crashing into a reflection of itself in a window. In Spring I regularly watch birds attack my Ford wing-mirrors when I park next to `their turf`. Here in England the problem is often solved by placing stickers on the window glass to break the reflection. Try it, any stickers will do. If it was a UK bird I would know it, but certainly your bird has a nest nearby.

Your bird sounds like a robin red-breast, and I'm thinking he sees his own reflection and is using territorial behavior. You might call your local wildlife division of a State Park in your area, and see if they can give you some advice before the bird bashes his brains out!

okay can you get to the top of the window if you can hang an aluminum pie plate (the kind you throw away) right in front of the window and the bird will stop this behavior because the breeze and the reflection off the aluminum will scare it and it does work . good luck .
