Will My Marine Discharge Affect My Future?

I signed up for the Marine Corps when I was a junior in high school. I went through MEPS and made the pledge to protect my country, etc. I was 17 years old.

I thought about my decision and realized college was what I really wanted. I told my recruiter to get me out but before he could do that, he got transferred. I told the head guy at the Marine Corps office to let me go.

He told me that I was honorably discharged from the DEP (Delayed Entry Program). I am thinking of joining a military branch after graduating college. It's just an option.

So, how will this discharge affect my job opportunities? Thanks.

I second the first answer HOWEVER if you want to get a civilian job on base and your interviewer asks you why you opted out, you better have a pretty freaking good story and you better at least act like you really regret the decision. I'm active duty, my dad and both grand dads are retired, and my mother runs a child development center on base. The civilian on base jobs are competitive and they won't hire someone who has less than the utmost respect for the military and military life.

You were not dishonorably discharged, you just declined contract.
The only thing this will affect, is your ability to join the armed forces. Once you sign the papers to enter DEP you are half way obligated to join the armed forces. If you opt out, then you will not be accepted if you try to enlist later.

But it will not affect your civilian career one bit.

First of all if you haven't even been on active duty yet , you should probably receive an Administrative Discharge under Honorable conditions, and / or NOTHING!

At least when I was on recruiting duty, applicants on the Delay program weren't ever sworn in until the day you were ready to head for PI / SD MCRD.

Who was your recruiter , when and where?

You weren't discharged from the Marines, you just DEP'd out. Until you ship to boot camp you're not held to anything. No it won't affect anything.
