How much power does a president truly have? |
Don't get me wrong I think who we have in office is important, but how much power does a president really have? Isn't that why our founders gave us a 3 branch goverment? In reality they have little power over domestic items. They can not start or sponsor a bill, overide a veto or the courts. Thier power comes from the veto, and that their party will uphold the veto. They also have the "bully pulpit", this power is unknown. In the hands of a popular president, aka Reagan, they can use it to get anything they want, an unpopular president, aka Carter, can not use the "bully pulpit" at all and are at the whim of Congress. The president's real power lies in foriegn affairs, which is where most presidents make thier marks. that three branches to the government is no longer in effect. dick cheney has spent the last six years rewriting the law, strengthening presidential powers, voiding the old checks and balances. A tremendous amount. Way more than the legislative, judicial branches or anyone else on Earth. I hope that what Golden said isnt true..Yes, that is why our founders gave us a three branch government..though in my opinion The legislative branch has a little bit more power than the other two. |
