Exchanging gifts among the office ? |
I just started a new job about a month and a half ago and am not sure how to go about the Christmas season with my new co-workers? I know I will not branch out of my department when it comes to gift-giving, but am undecided if I should give everyone in my department (7 ppl) a gift... and if so, what ?! I do not expect that they will all be bringing gifts as they are all males, but I am used to doing this at my previous job. Not sure what to do here? Tips ?! What about wine? Is that inappropriate? Do not give them gifts unless you're sure if the whole office is doing it - maybe they're having a secret Santa or something. But you do not want to make others feel uncomfortable... but candy=] or cards small gifts. Candy, pen, post-its. Something small & generic with a nice note - after all, it's the thought that counts. Happy Holidays! Ask what they do and if they do not bring gifts, i would simply buy some assorted cards and give them a Christmas card. If you feel the need to go a little further, buy a box of cookies or candies... I wouldn't go to far out Big plate of cookies / fudge / candy for them to share. you guys should just do the secret santa thing. you know like picking peoples names out of a box and who ever you get you buy that person present. hope this helps good luck! pen and pencil set with 08 calendar would be cool Okay, that is very very sweet of you , LOL ....i wish i worked with you ! ...okay well you could buy some chocolates and give them all chocolates , and if you don't like that idea you could go out to walmart , target or one of those places and they have beautiful gift baskets made up for guys and girls ...you can get them that ...(gift basket) ..they have some that is filled with coffee beans and mugs, they have ones that has cheese and sausage ! So its your choose , but they have a whole bunch more ...just go to walmart and look at all the nice stuff they have ...you will be amazed ! Good luck and hope you find what your looking for !!! I would buy a gift for anyone that is under you. Any assistant or mailroom person, etc. You don't need to buy gifts for peers or bosses. Check to see if there will be a company party and if the staff normally draws names for an exchange or anything. If you really want to buy for your dept. You might want to get something the whole office can enjoy like a nice basket of snacks or something. well find out if the do a gift exchange (my company does a secret santa where everyone pulls one name and that is who you buy for $20.00 limit.) at the end we reveal the secret santas. If they dont do ANYTHING for the holidays just count yourself lucky that it saves you money, but if they dont do anything I wouldnt bother. i work with all men too for xmas im getting them all gift certificates...u choose how much but talkl to them and kinda feel them out on what theyre into first i do 25.oo for each its nice with out sayin ur an xmas spaz.. Ask your supervisor what is appropriate. We have a "secret Santa" gift exchange - where we buy for one person - with a $ limit. Then, if you feel like getting little things for everyone on top of that, you can. Bring in a bunch of homemade baked goods. Give everyone their own platter and one to share during the day. The men will love it and it will be nice but not inappropriate. That way you don't have to make it seem too personalized or awkward. buy small stockings stuff them with pens,notes,candy,etc.... Then you should ask them what they typically do for xmas. Most offices already have established proceedures, IE a secret santa, or a variation of this etc. Surely you are not going to be buying presents for everyone in the office. I don't get gifts, just because I don't want anyone to feel obligated to return the favor. I did have a co-worker that once got little $1.00 boxes of chocolates and wrote merry christmas with a metallic marker on the top. I thought it was cute. Other than that, I'd just get cards. Maybe bake a couple of dozen cookies or other baked and bring them in to share in a communal space. This only works if this is not something you do all the time. If it is maybe something a little more personal like an inexpensive mug full of candy. I always try to get something that is more wintry than Christmasy since not everyone celebrates Christmas. No, no, but a card would be nice and if they have a Chris Kringle, then participate, good luck with your new job If I were you I wouldnt go out of your way to get them a gift! Its nothing to stress over you just started working there! If ya'll havent talked about getting gifts for each then dont! If you feel bad about not getting them anything just get them a christmas card and a gift card from somewhere! Dont put a lot of money on the gift card!! Hope I helped! Since gift giving is a tradition for you maybe you can get everyone in the spirit of giving without breaking your wallet. My family plays a game called, "White Elephant". We all bring a gift that cost under $10 dollars or we recycle gifts that were given to us that we couldn't use. We wrap the gifts and on gift giving day we all pick numbers from a hat (according to how many people are there with gifts). The person who picks number one starts things off. They pick a gift from the gift pile and unwrap the gift. Then the person who has number 2 is next. They can either take the gift from the 1st person or pick a new gift. If they take person number 1st gift then person number one gets to get a new gift from the pile. Then the game continues like this until you get to the last person. At the end everyone will hopefully have a gift and some fun getting into the holiday spirit! Best wishes The general rule for office holiday gifts is never give something too personal, like a perfume, clothing, shoes, etc. Something good could be something like a book, pens, decorative stuff, etc. |
