FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. (April 29) -Michael Vick confirmed in a TV interview taped Saturday that he met with NFL commissioner Roger Goodell to discuss problems that have plagued the Atlanta Falcons ' quarterback this offseason.

Falcons vice president of communications Reggie Roberts said he hadn't spoken with Vick since his conversation with Goodell, but the quarterback's personal problems have clearly embarrassed the NFL and the team.

In the last week, Vick's name surfaced when police in Virginia arrested his cousin on drug charges at rural property the quarterback owns. Police reported that during their investigation they found neglected animals and evidence of dog fighting, including veterinary medications, treadmills for training and blood-soaked carpets similar to the ones used in fight pits.

In January, Vick was stopped at the Miami airport carrying a water bottle with a secret compartment that allegedly smelled like marijuana residue.

He vowed to make changes in his personal life regarding the kind of people he associates with.

"I'm taking it upon myself and giving everybody my word that things are going to get changed around," Vick said. "Things are going to get turned around. I have a game plan for it. ... The company I keep, a lot of things (have) got to change, and I mean that from the heart."

IAthletes should be held to the same stardard that I as a private citizen am held to.And when they break laws prosecuted as any average citizen would be and sentenced if guilty by the same standards.
As American citizens there are certain protected rights that apply to all legal citizens.The problem is where do you draw the Commisioners authority?

Of COURSE the Commish should look at it. It reflects on the sport when a big name player keeps getting in trouble and their name keeps getting thrown out there. That is why most contracts have a moral clause, if not all.

Definitely, because the NFL forks out a lot of money to these players, and how they behave off the field is just as important to onfield behavior. There are many kids who worship these players. They should all realize there are certain standards that should be adhered to. The NFL is their employer, in affect, and should have some sway in telling a player he is "out of bounds". If a player can't conform, then he should get fired just like any other employer would do.

Yes. If the league gets a "thug" reputation it will be abandoned by the sponsors and viewers.

Yes "off-field" activities should be closely scrutinized: not only for the potential of drug use, but for the sake of law and society.

A fan won't support a lawless team or player.
A sponsor won't contribute to a negative cause.
And certainly, a coach, cannot work with someone whos greatness - or lack thereof - has gone to his head.
