Should Canadians be forced to participate in war in 1917?

Do you think they should of?

apparently the number of volunteer recruits declined significantly in 1917and the Canadian government put in place conscription (forced military service).

if you were living back then do you think it was right for canadians to be forced to participate in war?

SERIOUS ANSWERS ONLY..

Since Canadian citizens did not protest this in sufficient numbers for us to know about it, they must have agreed with the decision.

The Canadians saw themselves as part of the larger British Commonwealth. This gave then an economic, social and cultural tie to the British. The large number of French decedents further strengthen the connection to the Franco-English cause.

So, I would imagine the Canadian government and many citizens might have been eager to be part of the larger world and fight along side their European cousins.

Similarly to the UK, Canada relied upon volunteers until manpower resources ran dry, In 1917 the British government thus the Canadian government too introduced conscription to all eligible males, conscientious objectors for either political, moral or religious views could and did face prison sentences for refusal to enlist.
In a mirror of these times I note an increase in US, Canadian and British advertising to enlist in the armed forces today, perhaps showing a sharp decline in 'willing' volunteers for a troublesome war, Lord help us if we ever return to conscription today.

I think you will find that conscription was brought in because of the complaints that Quebec was not supplying as many volunteers as the rest of Canada so the rest of Canada stopped volunteering. This is very strange when you consider that we were in there fighting for France. You would have thought French speaking Quebecers would have wanted to go fight for their mother country. As for forcing people if your
country is at war and you are told to go you go it is that
simple. If I was living then and had a husband or son or brother or father fighting and possibly dying for Canada I wouldn't be very happy if your husband/son/father etc was sitting on his butt making war profits safe at home when he was fit for combat.

several other countries also instuted consceiption at that time and it wasn't popular in any country. It was wrong, and very much against the freedoms of the people, but it was done and now is in the past. I'm sure if you asked a professional soldier today they would say that they would rather fight along side a willing soldier, as opposed to one forced to be there.

Given the gravity of WWI, and the fact that they were British subjects, absolutely- since Conscription was law at the time.

If this were to happen now, I'd say it was wrong, since they are slightly sovereign.

I'm not Canadian but what were their obligations to Britain as members of the Commonwealth?
