Air Force recruiters!!! <--- Prior service Army, Diabetic possibly join AF reserve?

I am prior Active Army and NG. I was diagnosed with diabetes while in NG and medically discharged for it. I would love to find a way to continue to serve, I was thinking that the AF reserve might be a option. I'm sure the answer is no, but it can't hurt to ask.

Dude, I love your desire to serve..

I would say NO, only because I had a screening where they asked me about recent medical treatments and specifically named Diabetes as a DQ item.

One thought, even if you are type 2 (like myself) - the stress of service, screwy diet and inability to have a set schedule would NOT lend itself to keeping healthy in service. Sure it could be done - but man, it really would bite to make yourself sick or insulin dependent....

Additional comments from Crystal Jackson, Paralegal, Government Relations Department, ADA:
At the present time, the military has a blanket ban against people with diabetes. For information, contact the American Diabetes Association at 1-800-DIABETES.

I admire your Hutzpah!

Semper Fi!

To my knowledge, diabetes is a disqualifier for all branches. It is a serious illness, hard to treat unless you have a stable schedule and can eat (decently) at regular intervals...all of which is hard to garuntee in the military. Dibetes can also lead to other health issues..some that can come on without warning, another reason that serving with this disease is not allowed. I commend your wanting to continue and say that you should still talk to a recruiter, just to be sure. However, there are other things you can do. You can volunteer at the local Fisher House (if you live near a military installation with a medical facility), the USO, the Red Cross or the VA. Since you have served, you can join the American Legion and volunteer with them to support our retired military members. Talk to a local recruiter..you may be able to volunteer with them as well. Just because you may not be able to enlist doesn't mean you can't serve...it will just be in a different, and physically safer way, than before.

I'm prior service AF. I'm currently in the Army. I thought about going back to the AF for a while. Chances are slim to none that you will be accepted for active duty but, for reserves.... well, I don't think it would be too good either. Your best bet would be to try the Air Nat'l Gaurd.

I'm not a recruiter but i could tell you the aswer is no but i respect you for trying, keep your head up and it will pay off for you.
