Community service hours for graduation project?

okay I am really excited to be starting my senior project this summer and I am ready to go.

I just have a couple of quick questions first,

1. when a college looks at the community service do they look at what you did, like if you put in two hours picking up trash would it be the same as your best friend spending two hours volenteering at a nursing home?

2. should I stick with things that are inside the feild that I want to work in after college?
I am just currious because I need everything to be as perfect as possible,

thank you all.

I posted this in adolscent because I also wanted to tell everybody to look for me, cause I am back and answering questions again!

thanks a lot!

haha missed you too grahm! lol

Colleges look at whether you cared about what you were doing. They can smell a resume builder miles away. What they want is someone genuine. Sixty hours (over the course of the summer) having a lemonade stand to raise money for (most any cause really) if you demonstrate passion for the cause is better (even though a seven year old could have done a lemonade stand).

For your lemonade stand -- in this example -- you would write a press release to the newspaper and make signs in Illustrator and invite a radio station etc. to make it a grownup lemonade stand.

So you want to keep it simpler and pick up trash or do the nursing home. Do you want to demonstrate your compassion and people skills (nursing home) or dedication and organizational skills (trash).

Hope this helps.

I missed you baby cakes.

Colleges look at the whole picture, not just one part of it. What they like to see is kids that are well rounded and manage their time well.

Your community service project doesn't have to be just one thing. You could do several things. But colleges like to see kids that have been volunteering right along because they want to, not just because they HAVE to for graduation.
If you have never volunteered and when you do volunteer, you only do the minimum required, colleges will see right through that. They will know that whatever you did was because you had to, not because you really felt empassioned by it.

I would think really hard about what project you want. Make it something that you can really get excited about. If that is picking up trash, then go ahead and do it. But make sure that you can explain yourself really well in a college essay as to why you chose that particular field to volunteer in.

Volunteer in areas that may be related to your chosen field of study but also that are outside of that. Again, colleges want to see that you have other interests besides what you are studying.

And to answer your question, no. Picking up trash is not the same as volunteering at a nursing home. For obvious reasons. Working with people is much more of a commitment and shows more compassion than just picking up trash.

Now, if your trash picking is with an environmental group and you are doing something productive with it like increasing recycling at your school or helping with a study of waste habits with a local college, then that is different.

Choose something that can make an impact on your community. Maybe even start a program that hasn't been done before. At our school some kids decided to start a recycling program for water bottles. We've decreased the trash at our school by about 1/3 since they started it. Maybe you could do something like that?
