Does my church have to allow a non-certified service animal into our church for servies?

They is a local man that would like to attend services. Our bi-laws state that the individual is more than welcome to come but the dog is not. We will pick him up and bring him into the church in a wheel chair if needed, but with having several young children and alot being affraid of animals our bi-laws say "no non-service are permitted into the church." Many individuals have seen this gentalman around town and in neighboring towns WITHOUT the dog and he's walking just fine (wal-mart, k-mart, pizza hut!) We have to give him an answer tonight if he can bring the NON-Certified dog into the church for services tomorrow, I've tried contacting the ADA but they are not open today! Please help, what are our rights here?

The church is not required to allow a non-service dog in the door. The ADA would not help as this dog is not necessary for this man to go anywhere apparently.

Allow the dog. That is a small price to pay for the chance to get someone's soul right with God. This may just be a test from God to see if your priorities are in the right place. Don't worry about the dog; God was able to calm the lions for Daniel, I am sure He can take care of one pooch.

From your description, it doesn't appear as if he needs the service dog all the time. And why not certified? I'd be suspicious. What does he need the dog for in church, anyway? Aren't there plenty of helpful people there to make his way easier- reading to him, picking up what he drops, etc. Maybe the church could assign someone as his helper every week, on a rotating basis. That's assuming he really needs the help. I think it's a disability scam, and I usually am on the side of good people.

I would hold off on the dog until you get the laws cleared about certified/non-certified and the impact of the ADA.
