How to become a diplomat/foreign officer service?

I have read a couple of yahoo answers about how to become a diplomat, but i have a couple of other questions.
1) what degree should i get to become a diplomat/ work for foreign officer service?
2) Should i try to get a degree in international relations, or getting a degree in international security and conflict resolution is ok as well?
3) Are there other degrees that i should focus on?
4) I live 30 min. away from San Diego (by the mexican border) in California, what are some colleges/universities that offer those degrees (international relations, international security and conflict resolution, and so on)
5) If i were to be a foreign officer service what other jobs, other than being a diplomat are there?

I know that to answer this question it will most likely take a lot of time...but im going to college next year and it would mean a lot if someone where to take there time and try to answer these questions. thank you in advance.
