What are ways you thank the Men and Women who have served in the American Armed Forces?

What are ways or suggestions you can thank the Men and Women who have served in the American Armed Forces today in the present day and in the past.

When I see somebody in the military in uniform, I introduce myself and I say "Thank you for your service to your country" and If I meet somebody who has served in the military in the past, I say "Thank you for your service to our country."

If anybody who is answering this question either has served in the military or is currently serving in the military of the United States of America, Thank You for your service to our country, the United States of America.

I usually walk up and introduce myself as a vet and tell them that I thank them for serving our country and shake their hand, if they have been hurt and it shows, then I tell them that I am very proud and thankful for all that they did for our country and hope that they get well again soon.
If I know that they are fixing to go overseas (or going on their 2nd, 3rd or 4th tour) I ask them to please be sure to wear their body armor while they are over there, that it's better than what I had to wear when I was serving and to please come back safe.
Since I live near Ft Hood (home to 1st Cav, 3rd Armored Cav Regt and 4th Inf Div) I tend to shake alot of hands, more so since 4th Inf Div is currently shipping out to Iraq. If you recall your recent history, the 4th Inf Div is the Army outfit that found and captured Saddam, so they are sort of on the 'Hit list' in Iraq whenever they are in Iraq doing their tours. One of my friends here is fixing to ship out on his 3rd tour, so keep him in your thoughts for the next 15-18 months please.

Well I disagree with Brittany. The best way to show your support is just to say thanks. Some people don't like to be hugged. That is a wonderful way to show your feelings but as a former Viet Nam Vet I don't like crowds and I don't like people getting to close. I'm sorry but thats the way I am.

I think it would be a good idea to give them a big hug when you see them.
The BEST thing you can do for them... is pray for them [:
Tell them they're in your prayers.
What could be better, eh?

As a vet I can tell you...a thank you goes a long way. Nice question. We are in the military because we choose to be, and we are just doing our jobs. Nothing more than a thank you is necessary.

I donate to the Veterans of Foreign war
I send care packages
write letters
and adopt a family at Christmas

I've written letters to them on holidays thanking them.

Myself and Family flys OUR nation's Flag,,,

and I if see any troops I'll buy them a drink,, something my grandpa had started,,( grandpa Army WIII Vet)

and say thank you!!!

Frankly, I would promise to never start a war again.
