Netgear router trouble?

Several times per week my laptop suddenly loses the connection to the internet. Lots of times when my home phone rings, it disconnects my internet. It usually resolves if I restart my laptop but this is getting bothersome. When I try to locate the router on my laptop (after disconnection) it tells me that it can't be found.

Some things to consider before posting answers for me.

1. The router is no where near my cordless phone base (as I have read this in other answers)
2. I am connected to Charter internet but I don't use their phone service.
3. My router is on the same floor level as the room where I use the laptop and no furter than 25 feet away.

Someone talked me into buying a Netgear over Linksys and I think I made a mistake...

If anyone has any ideas please let me know before I have to go out and pay almost $100 bucks for a new Linksys.

Well, try just changing channels on the router. Log in, go to the wireless page, you should see a channel selection. If it is set to say channel 11, try channel 1, if it is set to 6 try 1 or 11, then move to some of the "in between numbers" You should be able to find one that is not "blocked" by your phone.

Cordless phones on 2.4 gig do cause disconnects - its not the router its the loss of signal between the router and the machine. I have even seen cordeless speaker systems cause the issue. Anything on 2.4 can cause the issue and there are lots of devices "sharing" that band of frequencies.

Running encryption may also help you stay connected it can also work the opposite and cause you to disconnect so try with and without to see which works best.

Its not just the BASE of the phone that causes the problem, the handset has to transmit as well, just like your computer has to transmitt to the router they are "two way" devices and can cause issues. Changing from Netgear to Linksys isn't the issue (unless the linksys default channel is different!)

Good Luck

have you got filters on all of your phone connection points? this will sometime cause network interference if you don't
