My daughter got addicted to excessive Internet usage!10 points to whoever gives right advice.pls see details..

my daughter is on the computer everyday for a very long time and i fear someday she will get broad spectacles like ugly Betty's.i had installed fast internet service at $5 (200 rupees) per month.($1=40 rupees) i thought she will use it for useful informational sites but she never does that.instead she just chats and is always on yahoo!answers.she also interacts with strangers on orkut.i don't like it. some days, she uses sites like wikipedia too, but most of the time she just keeps downloading and chatting and all.and every month the internet bill is as high as $33.(1300 rupees)she has not understood the meaning of internet usage and even after so much time of making her understand, she can't leave her orkut and chatting life.what to do? i have so many times explained her but in vain,..i cannot keep a password to stop her from going because she gets information too. she everyday surfs on yahoo!answers and gets loads of information and also answers some questions. what should i do?

Okay, well i had the same problem i was addicted to the internet!! (im 15 btw) You need to explain that if she keeps heading the way she is, shes never gonna wanna go outside or do things itll just be internet 24/7 & explain the effects of being on the computer too long (i know that i was tired, moody, didnt want to do anything etc) Also it mite help if you restrict to what days she is allowed on the computer (ie maybe monday wednesday & friday etc) Also put a password on the internet that will help, she may complain but explain that it is herself that has caused you to take such measures!!

I made my mum change my password on all my accounts, untill i could control how long i was on the computer for!!,,

Just stop paying for it and it won't let her on then take her to a public place that the computer has a time limit, for school stuff or password the comp and only let her on when she needs stuff for school there is also the parental block thing that you can get that the teachers use at school that only allows you to get on certain sites that are approved by them.

Keep a password to stop her from going on. When she needs to go, online supervise her. Tell her she can only go on for half and hour and make sure she uses the computer in the same room as you so you can keep an eye on what she is doing. If she complains she need more time send her to the library, good old books have the same information.

Give her a time limit. For e.g 2 hrs is the maximum usage allowance. Lock your computer after that. At first she is going to get very annoyed but as time passes by, she will get the message.
Another idea would be for your to fix your monthly internet bill amount. If it exceeds your budget, then the excess is going to come out of her pocket money.

If you have a problem with how much Internet is being used, why aren't you being a parent? YOU are the parent, YOU can tell her when she can and can't use the Internet.
Take the power cord if you have to, it's really not that hard.

Its normal for teenagers to use the internet alot, its apart of growing up these days.
You can get some sites you dont want used blocked. Thats what i think you should do if you dont want her using those sites.

if you have a cord that plugs into the modem to make the internet work then take the cord and lock it up in a cupboard and take the key with you wherever you go...my mum did that with my sister and it works!

Yes, she can leave those things. It's called be a parent, and take the power cord to the computer. So then she can't use it. She'll live.

Any addiction is just an escape mechanism. So you have to make a better world for her to come back.

u should spent more time with her like take her out n do stuff with her that way it will keep her off the computer..

Time to step up and be a father. Unplug the computer, or sell it, or just disconnect the internet! She won't like it, but kids aren't supposed to get what they want all the time. If she's not responsible with it, take it away. (Seriously, you're a father! You can't handle this on your own?)

Oh, and by the way - you LOGGED ON to find out how to stop your daughter from LOGGING ON all the time. Maybe she's just taking after her dad (I mean, it doesn't seem like a real stretch of the imagination, now does it?).

She needs to go to some kind of class where she can meet other people and get sucked up into that drama. Because its the same thing, only you can really see the people she is interacting with. My mom sent me to modeling class, i am 5 foot four and fat okay. but i still have friends from there, and i remember that it taught me almost everything i know about real friendship. so sign her up! and since she likes the computer so much, how about an extracurricular computer class, good for school credit too!

I am an avid Internet teenage user myself. But I don't chat always because I'm too caught up with schoolwork. And I get bored pretty fast(even if its Internet).

You can set up passwords and limit her access to any suspicious chatting site or threaten her that you will cut the connection for a month or so. I know of many teenage friends who have the same problems. Some needed to be taught a lesson and learn from experience and some listen to their parents. I don't know your daughter's personality so I can't help much. She will stop all the chatting online thing if she's an obedient type.

Some doesn't learn until something bad happen to them. They don't listen but learn from experience.

Maybe you should make yourself more available to talk to her...about anything. Make her more comfortable with you, so she can come to you when she has questions, instead of going online.

Maybe remind her of old friends, that she can meet up with down the street. That way she won't be so lonely.

Encourage her to take up a hobby, like netball or some other local sport, that will increase her physical activity and also make new friends
