Why is my CD-Rom not working? I get the message no disc in drive. I uninstalled and reinstalled the cd-rom.?

It shows up as being installed. I have a code 10 error message in Device Manager under scsi/raid host controllers. I try the add new hardware wizard and go to manually pick drivers from list but there is only one to pick from and it is the one that had been used. No roll back driver available. I went to microsoft downloads and downloaded service pack 2, which didn't help. Can you help me by telling me what I need and get me to where I need to go to get it? I am feeling pretty computer illiterate with this problem. Would you explain your answer in elementary terms please, assumeing I don't know how to do anything on a computer so your answer explains even simple steps. I am using Windows xp media center. Would fixing the problem with the scsi/raid host controllers possibly fix the cd-rom problem? It doesn't recognize a disc in the drive to play or a blank one to write to. I am prompted to "insert blank disc" or "no disc in drive" comes up.

You should set the jumper manual on the back of your cd-rom, read here http://sdd.toshiba.com/main.aspx?Path=Se... to set your jumper.

To located your jumper, please read here http://sdd.toshiba.com/main.aspx?Path=Se...

Dont put yourself down. You've done some smart things trying to fix this and your question has 100 times better relevant detail that most we get here....

Fixing the scsi/raid problem isn't likely to help, unless you have a scsi CD,,,,,, most are on the IDE controller, same as the harddrives.

A cd drive that shows up in MyComputer but refuses to work is usually broken, internally. Mostly the read/write head, or its electronics, so you can't see any damage.

Here's your chance to upgrade to a writer that does DVD as well...they are only about $50 and half an hour install yourself (just reverse what you do to take out the old one, note which way the colour stripe on the cable goes). Or a USB one is a few bucks more, but no installation.
