.... That he [Satan] could give Jesus all the kingdoms of the world, for a single act of worship by Jesus? (Matthew 4:8-10)
Why would Satan think he could fool Jesus into believing that he could give Jesus these kingdoms? What kind of temptation is that?
Isn't it like Vot promising to give another member of R&S a position on the Yahoo! Answers Staff Team, when everyone knows Vot has no such powers to do so?
Why did Jesus answer;
"Go away, Satan! For it is written, 鈥業t is Jehovah your God you must worship, and it is to him alone you must render sacred service.鈥欌€?
instead of;
"Go away, Satan! The kingdoms are not yours to give"?
Your thoughts, please? Because according to the authors of Matthew and Luke, the kingdoms of the earth are satan's to give. That's part of the apocalyptic theme of the Gospels. The appointed times of the nations had not been as yet fulfilled.
An event during the earthly life of Jesus Christ proves that Satan has indeed been the one behind the beastly ruling powers. The Bible reports: 鈥淭he Devil took [Jesus] along to an unusually high mountain, and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory, and he said to him: 鈥楢ll these things I will give you if you fall down and do an act of worship to me.鈥欌€?(Matt. 4:8, 9) By reason of his controlling 鈥渢he kingdoms of the world,鈥?the adversary could offer them to Jesus Christ. The Son of God did not deny that the Devil was in position to give him these kingdoms. In fact, Jesus later told his disciples: 鈥淭here is a judging of this world; now the ruler of this world will be cast out.鈥濃€擩ohn 12:31. They were under Satan's authority. Adam gave that authority to satan in the garden. That was satan's tactic, to shortcut the will of God.
Satan promised Adam and Eve, "You shall be as God", when he knew all along it WAS God's intention that Adam and Eve would be as God. He just offered a shortcut through the knowledge of good and evil.
Thank God that Christ endured the cross to win back the authority to the kingdoms to become King of king and Lord of lords! Because he knew Satan's claim was not false.
He later refered to Satan as "the ruler of the world" (John 14:30)
Jesus himself, as Michael the archangel, fought in Daniel's time with one of Satan's Princes whom he evidently appointed over the region of Persia. In the book of Daniel this demon prince is refered to as "the prince of the royal realm of Persia " (Daniel 10:13)
The book of revelation also confirms that Satan is the unseen power behind the human governmental powers on Earth. The state of the world confirms this. (Revelation 13:2)
. Satan will do anything to disrupt God's purposes. He uses many methods. Among his methods is deceitfulness and temptation.
It is not possible to deceive if someone knows you're lying. Satan could not possibly deceive Jesus. Jesus had been around longer, and knew very well who was in control of earth's kingdoms. The only path Satan had was temptation. In Luke's parallel account (chapter 4), we see in verse 14 that the Devil concluded his "temptation," not "deception."
Satan offered the kingdoms of the world because they were his to give. And this is in harmony with other scriptural texts. satan is the god of the world, jesus christ has another kingdom, satan roams the earth seeking who he may devour ,.and all of those outside of christ and his church are ruled by satan.
you should read the holy bible kjv, it states that perfectly. so this really isnt a question that people can give opinions on, the answer is already in scripture. I feel that maybe when Jesus said that "it is written, 鈥業t is Jehovah your God you must worship, and it is to him alone you must render sacred service.鈥欌€?
he was trying to make a point that Jehovah is the one he gives his sacred service to, he was reminding satan who his worship belonged to it didn't really matter about what power satan had or didn't have Here's a first for me: a brief one sentence answer:
Jesus did not correct Satan because Jesus knew Satan's claim to be absolutely true. Revelation 13:1, 2 underscores the truthfulness of this fact.
Oops. Two sentences. Sorry. My bad.
Hannah J Paul I am not of an Abarhamic faith so do not know.
But I have been told that Satan has power over the material world and so giving and taking Kingship's and lands is within his remit.
God does not interfere with these things since that would violate peoples free will. When GOD follows through on anything ... THEY ARE COMPLETED DEEDS!
How many "completed deeds" have you seen by man or satan?
Time is short! satan knows the end is near! So how many can I, satan drag down with me?
However, those that seek the material goods and money own their own, get morsels handed to them by satan to keep them their.
Hmmmm ........ interesting! YAHOSHUA gave the proper response. Satan had won the world from Adam (like in a card game) and so they were his to give, more or less. The whole controversy is about worship, and the Savior clarified it. Jesus knew Satan to be correct. He is the ruler of this world. His influence has permeated every part of it, except for true worship. If Satan had not been accurate then it wouldn't have been much of a temptation.
Now if I may go off on a side point, Jesus showed us that the Devil can be opposed and he will flee from us just as he fled from Jesus. However, in Luke 4:13 Satan said, I'll come back at another convenient time. Showing that until Satan is destroyed we will have to continue to oppose him, which requires strong faith and trust in Jehovah. It is my understanding that Satan was the Prince of this World and therefore was in a position of ownership. Of course he is also known as the Father of Lies. Take your choice but it seemed that Jesus gave credence to the claim. 1 John 5:19 They are his, and Jesus knew it. That is why Jesus rebuked him, as you have cited above, for an act of worship that was not his to have. Jesus stayed loyal to Jehovah as we should. satan's a fool! do you try to correct a fool?
i mean what kind of an idiot would try to exalt his throne above God's? Isaiah 14 hmm... my dad would answer this question amazingly but um satin is constantly trying to deceive people and lie its just in his nature... Well, you know, ramblings of a schizophrenic, bronze age goat herder...aren't to be looked into to deeply.... cuz fools are a waste of time!!!!!!!! THE BIBLE SAYS THE DEVIL IS THE god OF THIS WORLD.YES ALL THE KINGDOMS ARE FOR HIS TO GIVE UNTIL JESUS RETURNS AND TAKES THEM BACK. THANK YOU FOR YOUR WISDOM AND HARD WORK FOR US HERE. db I cannot speak for god.
To answer your question: He was testing his FAITH. I believe satan knew who Jesus was- he was the best angel after all until his ego got in the way.
Jesus was making a point to Satan, even though he knew the answer was obvious- its easy to just say NO, go way. He was making a clear point- YOU are not god, I will never bow to you: you have no right giving away what is NOT yours.
We have to open our hearts & minds to listen tot he messages from above.
The devil was an angel who though he was better than god right- so he was banished to hell- earth is closer to satan than heaven, hence we must work MUCH harder to fight off the devil's influence.
We are all lambs on this earth out for slaughter by evil forces- I dont think the devil deems any of us worthy to directly contact- its like a mouse trap with cheese in it- just b/c its there, does not mean we have to bite- if we have options we might be more cautious & wise.
Unfortunately this is a materialist world & we need things like money to live - some of us will do anything & everything to achieve status, fame- I dont believe you have to "sell your soul" to do this. However, thats what ends up happening: money is NOT the root of ALL evil. LOVE of money is!
I do not think people should feel guilty for being wealthy as long as they help people. The problem with the world now is that most of us are too complacent, believing that money is the key to happiness- I can say first hand, this causes confusion. So instead of seeking the wisdom of god we look to "idols"- they are false people.
People who help those less fortunate are right. The devil does not lie to us - ultimately we do it to ourselves- he just sits back & amuses himself- God did not create us to JUDGE one another- I can do a search on scriptures, however, we could twist anything around to make it fit the argument. Hope my words explain themselves.
Jesus was a good man.
God is forgiving (compassionate father).
The Devil is too lazy to have real control.
Good ALWAYS conquers evil. Adam sold his birthright (so to speak) to satan, and satan had the rights to them. Jesus, as long as He was the perfect representation of Mankind before God (i.e. the 2nd Adam) would redeem (buy back) all the kingdoms. After Jesus died, having never sinned, he actually took the keys to death, hell and the grave. When He finishes the redemption process (read the book of the Revelation of Jesus Christ), He will open the 7 seals that give Him full rights, authority, and privileges of ownership, as the good "kinsman redeemer".
It's foolish to argue with one who is insane, and rather than trying to "prove" a point, Jesus merely quoted the Scriptures. You're talking about the same dude (satan) who has had thousands of years to read the end of the story (Revelation) ---and in fact probably knows the Bible better than any human ---(and knows for sure that God *always* keeps His Word) and yet still keeps on trying to win.
Sin causes confusion, and while satan is much smarter than I am, like a man being led to his execution, he continues to struggle on even when it isn't helpful or doesn't even make sense.
Also, as the above poster pointed out, the Bible says he is the prince of this world. People really can sell their souls to him for earthly gain, should they so choose. Satan is the god of this system of things on earth...the whole world is lying in the power of the wicked one.
He has the power.
God will take it away from him at Armageddon with Jesus as the warrior King.
Satan and his army and Jesus and his army will meet. God had it recorded thousand of years ago that Jesus will be victorious and will abyss Satan.
No matter what Satan can do to us Jesus can undo as he has been given all power and authority from Jehovah God.
Do not fall for evil promises and the showy display of worldly possessions. All of this stuff is garbage and will be done away with so stop now and put your attention to Godly things....Go and save as many as you can for time is swiftly running out...And the attitudes of these pitiful people is changing. They need help now...Do God's will and preach and teach and make the devil out to be the liar he is. Simple.
Jesus was just a man.
He had no power.
He had no influence.
He was just another jew.
Satan was an angel, he could do things Jesus could never conceive of.
Besides, Satan wanted to give ol' Jeezy a fair chance, since he knew that SATAN ALWAYS WINS!
Want proof?
You're reading this now, aren't you? Because the first option just restresses the message.
The other option leaves the door open to those questioning by saying, "Yes...but if he DID have them to give."
The first option does not leave a loophole.
Clever, as always. First, Jehova is one of the many names our ancestors used to refer to the one God throughout the centuries. The bible gives us others such as El. Rapha-el, Gabri-el, the ending of most of the names of angels means from God. Other name endings could mean-of God. Jesus said "When you see me, you see the father for he is in me and I am in him." The Devil was testing and tempting the humanity of Jesus. He envied the fact that His humanity was one with God while Lucifer had only been the refliction of God when in heaven before his rebellion. If he could corrupt Jesus' humanity the devil would have God bowing to him as he had the fallen angels in heaven doing so before their expulsion from heaven. |
