Academy Question?

Hello, my name is John and I am very interested in applying to a service academy (Air Force, West Point, Annapolis). I know all about the admissions process but I am too young to actually begin the process. (16 years old).

I was wondering what you thought my chances were. Here's my resume through my sophomore year.

Class Vice President
Member of LEO Club (Basically a high school Lions Club)
Spanish Club class officer
Member of School Newspaper
Member of Orchestra
Letterwinner in tennis,lacrosse, and swimming
GPA of 3.25 (this concerns me)
Member of Fellowship of Christian Athletes
Member of Church Youth Group
Work 30 hours a week in the summer providing tennis lessons to children.

I will apply for the academies summer seminars as well. I will hopefully do well on SAT/ACT.

If you have any ideas or suggestions to improve my resume, include them in your answer, please.

This is miscellaneous, but, I am 6'5 180 lbs.

Well, from a former service academy midshipman. you look pretty good. Your GPA is good combined with all the extra curricular activity that you have been involved in. I would say your chances are pretty good of being selected.

First of all, I hope that you know that you have to apply to the ROTC scholarships for all services. There are three. Then you take the steps to apply to the different civilian schools that you chose on those applications. Then you take the steps to getting an appointment to a service academy. Your GPA is the only thing that you need to worry about, school wise. On the other hand you have to be sure that you are physically fit enough to join all that branches as an officer. And I will tell you from experience that you need to be physically perfect to join as an officer. In addition you have to have CONGRESSIONAL letter of recommendation to any academy, along with three teacher recommendations for the scholarships.

I am starting my first year of college in a NROTC program.

You're right about your gpa. Do they have advanced placement classes at your school? You get extra points for those. Do they jrrotc at your school? You're too old for Boy Scouts now. Add some community service, like collecting for a food bank or serving meals at a homeless shelter. Throw in a part time job too. Oh and don't forget to study and get some sleep. LOL. You're going to have a full schedule.
Besides applying to the Academies, apply for ROTC scholarships too. You have less than a year. Next spring is when they'll start taking applications. Don't forget to apply to the colleges where they have the ROTC programs. To get the scholarship the college has to accept you. Try Embry Riddle.

Good Luck.

All of the prior answers hit the spot!

Additionally, you will want to speak with officers from each of the services, both those that went to the service academies and those that went ROTC.

My son initially was going to go to the AF Academy, then the Naval Academy and then finally decided on an ROTC scholarship. He is currently on his Midshipman cruise on the Roosevelt in Norfolk.

is the GPA part of an Honors or Advanced Placement curricula?

You need all the AP/Honors classes your school offers, as well as Calc and Physics.

the 3.25 is very low you want it at LEAST a 3.75 and to really have a shot..4.0.

i would definetlly say work on the gpa. and maybe add another hobbie. but at your build gain some more muscle and keep on the cardio like hit it hard. and think of joining like special forces or navy seals they like people that can think too.
