How do I know if my washing machine is "high efficiency"?

I need to know whether I should use "high efficiency" detergent in the machine.

I have a Fisher and Paykel model GWL15. It is a top load washer. In the user manual it says "....using 50% less hot water." I have heard if a machine uses at least 20% water, it is high efficiency. However, I contacted Fisher and Paykel customer service and was told it is not a HE washer.

Is it objective whether a washer is HE? Is there some type of symbol to look for that will identify the washer as HE?

Even if it is not technially HE, since it uses 50% less hot water, should I use HE detergent? My thoughts are that the answer is yes. Even though it might not be a HE washer, the fact it uses 50% less water means it might be better to use HE detergent.

Haha...I hear you...it can be confusing...however, the HE & "ENERGY EFFICIENT" are the confusing words that have you wondering...The front loaders are generally the ones that require the "HE" detergent...reason being>> low level sudsing! The ENERGY EFFICIENT washers even thought use less water, CAN tolerate the regular detergent just much less of it...usually about a few tablespoons...plenty...even energy efficient front loaders can tolerate the regular liquid detergent just much less about a few tablespoons! BUT front loader HE models...will SPECIFICALLY say HE as well as REQUIRE HE DETERGENT ONLY! I just bought new front loader HE LG W/D set...absolutely LOVE mine...7gals of water...HE detergent ONLY, then spins nearly dry and dryer barely needs to run long!!GOOD LUCK...any questions I am happy to offer you what I know...
