Will there be a draft anytime soon?

The left keeps saying the right is going to reinstate the draft next year. The right keeps saying the left was the only one ever to introduce legislation since 1975.

Clear things up for me among this partisan mess. I've asked this before and have not recieved a clear answer. Is the draft really coming back in 2009 or 2010? Would we need a draft if we struck Iran, or would it be purely tactical (e.g. Israel knocking out Osirak in 81)

Another person even told me if it did, there would be civil service options (which I do not have a problem with.) because they wouldn't want a repeat of Vietnam.

Some say we're meeting recruiting goals, but others are saying people are getting shipped out five times. More confusion.

I already know how the draft would be reinstated, it boils down to whether or not Obama/McCain would SIGN it.

This has great influence on who I will vote for (for the first time) this year.

So tell me: What are the odds of the draft returning?

I agree the draft doesn't work, it weakens the best military in the world with people who don't want to be there.

This question gets asked at least once a week, if not more often. There is no need for a draft. The military doesn't want a draft. Military leaders can't say this because veterans groups take it as a slight, but conscription is not an effective way to operate a modern military force.

Threatening to reinstate the draft is just a political tool. How would the "right" reinstate the draft next year in a Congress controlled by the Democrats? Charlie Rangel (D-NY) is the one who has repeatedly introduced draft bills that have always failed.

Reinstating the draft would be political suicide for either party. How could the media resist the story of the poor immigrant; the first in his family to finish high school; recipient of a university scholarship; his hopes for the American Dream put on hold as he departs for boot camp and an uncertain future. Pure above the fold gold!

If there was a draft, allowing deferments or exemptions would be too reminiscent of the Vietnam Era. No deferments would lead to stories like the one above and anger the local party functionaries who would not be able to use them for patronage.

Neither candidate would have to think about signing a draft bill because it wouldn't get through Congress.

Lets look at it like this are people still signing up--yes
is the military meeting it's goals --yes
if we attack iran will we need more troops --yes
if some large power attacks us will we need a draft --yes

is a draft possible in the near future -- anything is possible
will it happen it depends on too many things to tell but I'm leaning on the no and I'll tell you now you will probably never get an answer as clear as you want.

I hope it returns - so the detached, I could care less american population start to pay attention. Send the "me, me, mine" generation off to fight for freedom and the chickenhawks. That will wake people up! (Of course the chickenhawks' kids will somehow escape, al la bushit and thug and their cronies in the mis-administration.)

the dems say that?

Thats funny, the only politicians to bring up the draft issue have been democrats

The draft isnt needed and it doesnt work.

Dems are using the issue to scare people, you know the same thing they accuse the GOP of doing.

There will be no draft

None. It would be political suicide for whomever proposed it. And this same urban legend comes around every few years. It's nonsense

The odds are slim to noe, each service each meeting their goals for voluntary enlistment, and doing so on an annual bases in about half the time! There is not the slightest comparrison to Nam!

USMC 68 Vietnam

That is why they have done little about illegal immigration. When they decide to bring down the law, they can promise the illegals amnesty if they sign up for military service.

It isn't going to return so thank vets and current members who are making sure it doesn't happen because they volunteer to serve.

absolutely not

i hope not. i don't wanna die

No. The U.S. military is all voluntary. There won't be a draft. The thing that you're referring to in the political arena is called "mudslinging" - kind of like what junior high girls do when they are being stupid, childish and immature - it's just rumors and politacal vote getting propaganda and scare tactics to entice the public into voting for one party or the other - same idea as the rumors and crap that goes around during the vote for prom queen. There won't be a draft - we have the most powerful military in the world and thousands more enlisting every day.

So relax and next time you see a veteran or an active duty service member or reservist, thank them for that.

Well, from what I have heard, McCain has been planning a draft for the war since he is a supporter of the war. However, McCain will most probably lose to Obama, who could sign it but I doubt he will. Anyways, I really hope this doesn't happen. Too many innocent Americans and Iraqis dying, just end the war. It won't happen overnight, but atleast get some sort of plan going.
