Is it bad to be "TO NICE" as a restaurant server? |
I just started at Black Angus, while going through training, I had this particular table, that I exceeded great service. Everything was picture poerfect for them, they told me I was doing a great job and even said quote, "you are seriously the best server we have ever had" .... They left a $5 tip on a $65 meal, I could not believe, one of the other servers, said I was being to nice to them, but this came from a server who is good, but doent really care nor is he really professional. My question is can being too nice make for a bad tip? Is it possible that I was too nice. I have also made a $30 tip on a $46 meal. So is it possible to be too nice, and should I quit being "too nice" cause with some people I believe being as he said "too nice" pays off like the $30 tip on a $46 meal. What do you guys thank?? There is no such thing as being "TOO" nice. You are either nice or you are not. What irritates me is when a waiter/waittress is too invasive and interrupts you every five minutes to ask if everything is alright. I'd be in the middle of an intimate or important discussion, and find it annoying to have to acknowledge the question each time. Once is enough. The most important thing is that the client is served with a smile and that the server doesn't take too long to take an order. I tip generously for good service but not for invasion of privacy or for being left to wait ages until i'm given a menu! No you can't ever be "too nice"....I'm a good tipper any way but the servers who really do go above and beyond definitely get a good tip from me. You just got stiffed by some cheap assh0les hate to say it. Not all customers will do that to you. There is a line between friendly and professional and too friendly, once you cross that line you lose face. It is important to keep it all in balance; be nice but not overly nice and above all remain professional and focused at all times. You will always have assholes who will stiff you, that's part of the deal, but most will reward your good service. Working as a server or existing in society, you should always strive to be as good, as nice as you can be. Bus boys steal tips, did you know that? I've seen it almost all the time at any restaurant. They slip in a dollar or two when nobody's lookin'. Nah. You can be pushy, or you can bother people too often, but I don't think you can be too nice. As for the tip thing, some people just aren't or are good tippers. no it not and u being nice to them pays off as u can see in u tips keep up the good work I've found the best way to get big tips is to have a good sense of humor, and to provide A+ service. "Nice" is good, but don't stress about minute details, unless the customer genuinely seems to care about them. |
