ok. i am an irish- american 15 year old boy. my grandparents are from ireland, but for aome reason, my family can make it be like we are an 18th century irish-american family.im sick of it. we are so old fashion. do all irish-american families have this problem? i mean, my grandparents live with us,me and my 6 older brothers have a 10:00 curfew, and we are all up bright and early Sunday morning to go to Mass. dont get me wrong, i love being Catholic, but why can't we at least go to the 10:00 service? my girlfriend can't be over past 8, and it just sucks. please help? other irish families know what i mean? and im emmbarresed because my grandma AND my ma makes it look like we are all immigrants becuase of their irish accents. it irritates the hell outta me. what do i do?!? and im a teenage boy spare me from the "irish accents are cool dont be ashamed" thing. and im AMERICAN! not an immigrant!!!

I feel you on this one man, but honestly what can you do? You might be able to suggest to your folks that they should take on the american culture more, but then you'd be telling them to be something that they're not. And really, there's no need to worry about it, everybody's parents are a little eccentric...

It sounds to me as though you are ashamed of your heritage. Your grandparents have faced a large amount of adversity and civil unrest in Erie, so you should consider this and take time to listen and learn from their experiences.

As for the curfew, Mass, morality and such- yes every family I know of is very strict- but in the consideration of their rules and customs- every one in my family (myself and 5 siblings) have completed college and beyond, we all work in professional fields and we all continue to observe the ethics we were taught as Irish-Americans.

As to your concern regarding your grandparents immigrating from Erie, mine did during the famine- they passed a few years ago and I would have loved more time to learn from them- I truly believe the impression they made has lasted.

If you can not accept your heritage and their customs either move out and rebel at 18 or get a job and pursue the courts to be emancipated and be an "American"- you might be surprised to find though, you will face other cultures and heritage throughout your life as our country is a "melting pot"

It just sounds to me- you need to do some research on your heritage- perhaps contact the Ancient Order of Hibernia, and find out why your family observes these customs and quit trying to be so "main stream American" when you have a vast and unique heritage if you would take the time to appreciate it.

Well, if all teenagers were brought up a family like yours, I think the world would be a better place.

When you're 18, living in your own home, then you can start to make the rules. Until then, just count yourself lucky that you live in such a caring and stable family environment. Millions of 15 year olds around the world would love to be in your shoes.

You might be american but your roots are important to your family.

You can make some changes to give yourself some space.
Just say I'm not off to 8am mass I'm catching up on my sleep I'll go to 10am or do what catholics do in England and Ireland go to teh saturday evening service and have a really long lie in!!! You are a teenager when all is said an done.
It is not just being Irish american that girlfriends are not allowed past 8pm.
Try being a latino girl and see what it is like being minded by big brothers!!!

What aabout other faiths have you thought how hard it is being Muslim church 5x perday and arranged marriages.
I suggest you kjust think past your family and theior accents. they have them they can't change but you can leave and go to college in just a few years an dyou will realise that close families are part of life worldwide.

If you really want to get the Hell out of your parents Protection and Care, then join the Marines and prove to us that you are the Man you claim You are! Then enlist yourself to Iraq, go to the shites or public place and shout at the top of your voice you are American, lets see!!
Be proud and thankful that your parents work hard to migrate and give you the status that you are enjoying now. Time will come you can be on your own, all you have to do is wait! three more years and you can be a drunkard on the streets, i dont care but your parents surely will.
