How does one go about using his dog for a stud service?

I have an AKC registered male Papillon, and was wondering how one goes about getting sperm and shipping it out?

1) Does the vet do it? Is it expensive? Does the sperm need to be shipped immediately?

2) Do you even make much money from it? My Papillon is not a show dog, but has great bloodlines with champions from both sides.

3) Is it worth it, overall?

Thank you. As usual, I'll award a best answer.

Unless your dog has had a full set of genetic health testing (hips certified with OFA, eyes been CERF'd, and any other recommended health testing for your breed)- then just having champions in his lines mean nothing. I have a 10 year old standard poodle who has a ton of champions in her pedigree- including the most productive stud of all times- Eaton Affirmed- yet- she is the most hideous example of the breed. Real poodle people have actually laughed when they saw her!

Trying to collect and ship semen is expensive, and is not as reliable as a regular mating- it's not uncommon for a breed that normally has 6-8 puppies in a litter, to only have 1 or 2 when having AI. I don't breed, but if I did- unless the stud was FANTASTIC, and there was absolutely NO WAY to get them together (like if the dog was overseas)- I wouldn't wast my time on AI.

Nobody would pay for sperm from a pet dog.

That is only used for shown champions who are greatly in demand and don't want to have to ship the dogs back and forth for breeding. With the millions of champion dogs in the world to use, nobody who would pay for sperm would pay for it from a pet. Sorry. Either show him, or neuter him.

Edit: And to add to what someone else said, champion background is irrelevant. We have a Papillon whose parents were both champions, had almost all champions in his pedigree, and while he is quite pretty, he is NOT show quality and was neutered as soon as he was old enough. I would never have been irresponsible enough to breed him just because he had a champion background- the dog being bred must itself BE a champion!!

Forget about shipping sperm anywhere----that's done for dogs in high demand.

His bloodlines mean nothing if he isn't a breed champion and has all his health clearances. You won't be getting a large fee for him to service a female.

BTW Females are sent to the stud's kennel when they are in heat----so they would be coming to your house and you would need to take care of them for a week or so and make sure everything is done properly and safely.

Is it worth it? No, you don't have a dog whose services would attract people willing to spend money to have sperm shipped to them.

yes it is expensive. the vet. can tell you what needs to be done and how much it will cost. then add in the shipping cost. your dog will have to have a sperm count to see if his sperm is even viable, it may not even be good (no offense).

just because your dog is AKC reg. does not mean he should be bred and champions on both sides does not mean good lines. you need to study the pedigree and research the champions and what their progeny has done in the show ring, being a champion doesn't mean they reproduce themselves.
i don't think it would be worth it.
