How will volunteering at an animal shelter help the community?

I have to write a one and a half paper on service learning for school and that is one question I have to answer about my topic and I'm not sure how to answer it. So help would be greatly appreciated.

I lifted this from a speech I wrote...

Problem Thesis: Animal Shelters in America are over-run with unwanted pets and nearly 11,000 die each day while people continue to purchase their animals from pet stores, puppy mills, and independent breeders merely to get a 鈥減ure bred鈥?animal.
Solution thesis: Instead of purchasing animals from pet stores, independent breeders, and puppy mill breeders, we can all make a choice to adopt our next cat or dog (kitten or puppy too!) from an animal shelter, pound, or humane society.

Volunteering at a shelter would help with the influx of animals they receive due to this problem and allow the community to be more at peace knowing someone is helping and offering a solution to the problem. Here are some facts...

A. According to Aubrey Henderson, a dog shelter worker and animal rights activist,
somewhere between 4 and 5 million animals die in shelters each year because they do not have a home. That鈥檚 a whopping 11, 000 a day!
1. Also, between 20-25% of animals in shelters are 鈥減ure breeds鈥?(that鈥榮 about a million 鈥減ure breed鈥?animals without homes).
2. 2 to 4 million puppy mill puppies are sold each year and an additional 300,000 to
500,000 of these 鈥減ure breed鈥?dogs are sold in pet stores each year. That means that the amount of animals sold is nearly equivalent, or possibly even exceeds the amount of animals being euthanized in America鈥檚 shelters each year.

Why wouldnt you want to work in a shelter that is trying to decrease this problem by offering the community pets at a lower cost to them? you get all the value for less $, help animals, feel good about yourself, and it doesn't cost anything since you volunteer!! hope this helps :)

When people volunteer, anywhere, they are given duties and responsibilities. Invariably, people also develop a genuine interest in and a desire to do more for whatever they are involved in. They will also spread the word about what they are doing and inspire others to do good too. This can only help make them mature, compassionate and responsible people, people who are good for any community.
