Do you feel ill at ease if you are getting a haircut and there is no conversation?

Recently I have been going to those budget hair salons and have found that most of the women who work there are really weak when it comes to personality, customer service or conversation. I try to engage them in some small talk but usually get one or two word answers and a message do not talk to me.

I wonder why they choose a field of work that involves people and then have no interest in talking.

I'm a hair stylist and trust me.. the women in this field who don't make conversation aren't going to have a long career in this profession. Your tip as a stylist is generally 30% larger when you engage in conversation with your customer.. it's also important to get a feel for their personality to see what kind of style/cut would suit them.
But yes, I get very fidgety and feel really weird when the stylist doesn't talk to me.

Well, it is quiet in the situation you describe. What I hate is when they talk behind your back to coworkers or speak in another language to them. Be thankful you haven't had that. You never know if they are speaking ill of you, their customer.

This field of work is a matter of skill. People skills are great if you like them, but that is a plus, not a requirement. Polite conversation is enough in my book. I don't require small talk. They may be preoccupied and may have been instructed not to gabb.

sometimes i actually feel more uncomfortable when they wont stop talking, since i guess im not there for chatter im there for a hair cut, lol... and as a new mom, its nice to just have some peace and quiet every once and a while

but i don't really like it when talk too much cause i want them to focus on cutting my hair
